The Sheffield — Restaurant in Town of Brighton

Service and location were fine. Unfortunately we did not enjoy the food and regretted coming here (we had heard from a friend it was decent, same folks as Tap and Mallet). They were out of several things (all fried and grilled chicken, except the nuggets). The water I was served had a notable odor and aftertaste. We suspected it was the glass it was served from, my wife's was fine.

The aioli we were served was basically white water and was extremely unappetizing. We both ordered the burger. The bun was tasty (from Amazing Grains) but the actual patties were much too small for the bun. They were well cooked but the burger was lacking in flavor. The bacon they served was very dry and almost impossible to chew so we both picked ours off.

The fries and cole slaw were good. We didn't order any beer. Overall, for food, there are much better options for pub grub...

Went in this evening w my wife. Arrived just shy of 6pm. Friday night, so not unreasonable that it was busy.

Walked in and a host took our name. “15-20 min, ok?” We agreed. “Have a drink at the bar and I’ll come find you when something opens up.”

After the 15-20 min passed, at first we figured we were close to being seated. But then we started noticing that nobody was leaving…much less eating any food. It looked like everyone seated was waiting for food.

40 min later, not one table has cleared. And the host has made no effort to make contact with us (matter of fact he went AWOL). Waited another 5 min, at which point the host was still MIA. We left and went somewhere else.

Bottom line is, if you’re swamped that’s fine. But tell me. Don’t tell me 15-20 min wait - if you know there’s no chance of that happening.

I’ll think twice...

Been waiting anxiously for Sheffield’s to open in the old Otter Lodge location. Was not disappointed. Open feel with a cool, natural wood multi-colored striped bar atop a brick base, tin ceiling, separate dining area and bar and unobtrusive social distancing measures. Very comfortable environment which combined with great service (even this early in their opening), a perfectly crispy, flavorful fish & chips with mushy peas and a crisp draught German pils made for a spot-on first impression. Cheers and thanks for finally bringing a true neighborhood pub...
