What an abundant disappointment đ
I read the review in the TU a while back, being a huge foodie and Purnomo restaurant fan, looked for the first occasion to make reservations so Motherâs Day it was.
My husband and I have regularly dined at Yonoâs for special occasions, dpâs for Albany events nights and so expected Day Line to live up to what we know AND the TU review. Omg đ± soooo much no.
Our reservation was for 3 pm. We were seated beside an un-bussed table for 45 minutes. I made eye contact with the waitress bussing the table who had the good sense to pay attention to us. She asked if we were being helped which was a huge no. Let me clarifyâthis place is not bigâwe counted maybe 6 staff on the floor and perhaps 50-60 diners. She took drink orders and we had the presence of mind to place our entire food order immediately bc weâd no idea if weâd get attention again anytime soon. She assured us sheâd stage things. I asked the price of the MP ceviche and she didnât know. I ordered it anyhow.
Our drinks came reasonably quickly sometime before 4 pm. At about 4 pm we got the CONDIMENTS for the bread service we ordered with the statement that âthe bread would be just a couple more minutes.â And then⊠âŠnothing. I again made eye contact with our sever who came up and said that the bread was taking longer than expected. 4:15, the âbreadâ came outâdifferent server. It wasnât breadâit was more like popoversâquite good but not bread.
Then yet another different server brought us our calamari and crab cakes. The crab cakes were amazingâdense and almost all crab. So much for staging because then our original server brought the reminder of our items a mere 5 minutes later. There was no room on our small table for everything so we were scrambling to combine it all.
Their purportedly awesome uni & caviar nachos? Uni was nowhere to be seen. It was a small pile of soggy potato chips (not kidding) and lobster meat (quite ample) and a smattering of caviar. The ceviche was evidently salmon with a mango salsaâpresented on a toasted taco shell.
Itâs worth mentioning that EVERYTHING was over-salted and I love salt. My husband originally wondered why we werenât offered salt & pepper. We found out why.
All right, youâve read this far⊠I excused the bad reviews I read because I felt people complained about trivial thingsânamely service. Well, they werenât wrong because the service was abysmal. But the food was barely any better.
Finally, EVERYTHINGâand I mean EVERYTHINGâcame with a mayonnaise-based sauce. Ceviche which should be light and citrus-yâyeah, mixed with mayo. Calamariâagain, mayo-based dip. Uni (?) and caviar nachosâdrizzled with mayo sauce. Crab cakes? MAYO dip.
Beautiful venue. Wonderful cocktails. Horrible service. Worse food. Some of it was good (crab cakes, ample lobster meat (should have been uni) â think $32 for soggy cold potato chips and mayo. Spent $200 and wish weâd gone literally anywhere else.
We traveled from the Cap Region where there is plenty of fine dining and amazingly, unexpectedly good small places. Why Coxsackie residents or travelers would pay for this is unknown...
Read moreFirst visit last night for dinner, and we were looking forward to experiencing this new restaurant; don't think we could have been more disappointed.
Atmosphere: While the interior could be considered "funky modern" it was more like eating in a 1-1/2 story banquet room with fluorescent lights; in the evening there are very few areas where light is focused, so the overall effect is an uncomfortable "haze". The long bar is inexplicably located right in the middle of the main room, blocking the windows looking out towards the river; locating it towards the back of the room would have opened up the entire front of the room to water views for diners. The modern "pop" music playing was a strange contrast to the setting. And while the outdoor deck faces the river, only the small middle section has glass walls; the rest of the deck has seating set behind solid walls, which one can't see over when sitting. You have to wonder if the "designer" ever visited the site.
Food & drink: With the owner being a sommelier, it is odd that there is such a limited selection of wines (all by the glass; 10 whites, 3 rose', and 4 red?). One of us ordered cranberry juice with soda, which ended up being soda with "a splash" of juice. The dozen oysters we sampled were very good, but it went WAY downhill from there. Baby kale salad had an odd aftertaste after some bites, somewhat chemical (like a cleaner?) so not sure what that was all about. The Uni & caviar nachos were strange: potato chip like base was nothing special, and the seafood ingredients were hard to find (see lighting comment above) and certainly insufficient in quantity to warrant $32 cost. The paella was downright terrible: rice was dry (nothing like real paella cooked slowly over a fire WITH LIQUID), and the chorizo sausage indecipherable (when asked, the server advised the chorizo was minced so we wouldn't be able to detect it.....say what?). There was little seafood (6 small clams & 4 small shrimp) in the dish, so our advice would be to avoid this if you have even a remote idea of what a seafood paella is.
Service: Our server was pleasant, if not slightly inattentive. After delivering the aforementioned cranberry juice, she corrected the drink for us when asked and advised "yeah, I noticed that but figured I'd give bartender the benefit of the doubt".....really? When a second drink was ordered we saw her bring it close to our table but left on the bar when she was asked something before reaching us: there it sat for about 10 minutes, until we got up and retrieved it ourselves. When asked for a salt shaker she responded that she thought there was one somewhere and set out to look....only to find it 10 minutes later on the waitress stand right next to our table.
Given the price & portions of food, our post-meal consensus was that this might be a nice place for a drink (as long as you're not looking for a wide selection of wines) on a nice day to view the outdoors (as long as you can snag a table with a view inside, or one of the few seats outside where your view is not blocked...
Read moreThis restaurant was chosen as a celebration for my 30th birthday during restuarant week. I may have recieved the worst service ive experienced at a restuarant in my three decades of life.
We made a reservation for 7pm and was promptly greeted by the manager who kept looking over at the table he had given to different guests. Even with a reservation we were given one of the worst seats which was next to thier POS system so it constantly has staff running to and from the machine.
We ordered our food from the pre-fixed menu along with some drinks while we waited. It took them over 20 minutes to let us know they ran out of salmon, which wasnt an issue we pivoted with a second dish of Paella and all seemed resolved.
Then things got interesting. They seated a couple next two us that kept saying how they knew the people there. for the next 45 minutes we got to watch them serve them with appetizers, an entree and even free oysters. while we continued to wait for even a single crumb to arrive at our table.
After waiting over an hour for nothing to come out i had to ask our server, who although nice was not attentive to our needs (actually eating food). He proceded to let me know over five different times a manager would come see me which became quite insulting after the second time because the manager was too busy serving his other guests for 45 minutes to even stop by. He did somehow manage to eblow me in the meantime though as he was serving the comp'd oysters to the guest next to us.
An hour and a half into service we finally recieved something from our prefixed menu, not the appetizers we ordered but our entrees to our suprise.
Finally after the 5th time of the server telling me the manager would come he did after our entrees arrived and just gave the generic speech you would expect from someone that dropped the ball yada yada. It would have felt more heartfelt if any ounce of attention was paid to us, our lack of food and the fact that the guests next to us were getting all there food without issue. Maybe if the manager came sooner he could have readded our ticket or told the kitchen to cook ours at all.
We were told it would be made right and his solution was basically to have our two glasses of wine each comp'd but somehow still paid just below the restaurant week fixed price menu even without recieving any appetizer at all. Maybe that was making it right in his head but he clearly was caring about the bottom line more than his customers. But after 2 hours in this place i was ready to just leave instead of argue with incompetant and uncaring people.
Its a shame because the food tasted good, at least the small portion we got to try but the service i will never forget for all the wrong reasons. Hopefully they can improve thier process and how they handle thier own failures in the future but if we stay here again we will be sure to only visit the places around town and not inside the hotel. Hope all who read this find it helpful and as memorable for you as...
