Owner broke the law. Under the American with Disabilities Act a public restaurant cannot require require a person with a service dog to sit in a "designated area"
That's exactly what The owner, Rick, did when my wife and I arrived with her small service dog. In fact the lovely waitresses immediately noticed that she was a service dog and seated us in the main outdoor area. A few minutes later the owner approached us and demanded that we move to a specific area with picnic tables on the side of the restaurant where another couple was sitting and smoking. Clearly a separate area. Requiring us to move is definitely completely against the law
He wasn't discreet about it and when I tried to explain to him that there is no reason to separate us and that it was against the law he held steadfast. We were humiliated in front of other restaurant patrons. We chose not to sit in the isolated "smoking" area and went down the street and enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Inlet Restaurant who immediately recognized my wife's plainly marked credentialed service dog and sat us "anywhere you like". Food was excellent. We had lobster, oysters tempura haddock and calamari. All excellent.
Me. Rick G. Owner of Crabby Cowboy owes us an apology and an assurance that he will seat us in a nondiscriminatory manner next time. Clearly he's ignorant of the law and that could land him in trouble some day.
I left him with a ADA Service Dog fact sheet explaining the law and the obligations of restaurant owners to recognize that there are people with disabilities who need equal treatment and that this is law.
It's too bad. I ate there once without my wife and it was very good and ate outside in the main veranda. I had promised to bring her there to experience it for...
Read moreHorrible service. We came in and only two other tables were seated. They took our order quickly enough. We waited and waited for our appetizers. In the meantime another 7 tables were seated, their orders taken, and their appetizers served. Our appetizers came, but one was missing. No one came to check on us. They served all the other tables with their entrees while we sat... and sat... and sat... with no food. All the other tables were paying their bills before our entrees were served. My lobster was way overcooked and part of the entree, which was an upcharge, was missing. All the others had simple, but expensive, bar food. Finally, after everyone was done eating, the waitress came to check on us... believe me, she wasn't overwhelmed because all the other tables had 4 other waitresses. Nor was our waitress new... in fact, she seemed to be an owner? Anyway, when she checked on us, I politely let her know at that point that part of our meal was missing and to please remove the charges for them from our bill. She asked if, instead, we would like the missing items served now? Everyone was done and plates were being cleared. Of course, we don't want it now. I politely refused and reiterated to please remove the charges from the check. I doubt we'll go back to try them again. Last year they were just ok, but expensive for what you get. This year was an absolutely terrible experience for the almost $300 meal...
Read moreFood was very basic. Not bad, just not a meal to remember. My brother ordered a flounder dinner and said it tasted off. The hostess gladly exchanged the meal, but she said there's nothing wrong with it. My brother got a lobster roll instead....she brought out an hors d'oeuvre sized portion compared to The Lobster Roll in Amagansett. We get the check and the original flounder dinner is still on the check instead of being charged $3 less. She reiterates that there was nothing wrong with the meal.....I guess the customer doesn't matter, just the restaurant's/owner's pride does. She says she'll adjust the bill....it comes back for the same items on it, and the same amount. I'm not one to cause a scene....she got me on a good night. I'm on vacation and not going to let someone ruin it for me with one lousy meal. I pay the bill, and get the @$!# out of there! There's too many other places to enjoy a good meal while in Montauk, just...
