t is with a sad heart that I have to write a negative review about Jackson’s Bakery.
I have been a customer of Jackson’s for over 20 years. I have tried, at one time or another, pretty much everything they make.
So, what’s the sad part? Their baked goods just aren’t the same and just aren’t very good anymore. I got a coconut cake yesterday, because I was in the area. This is a cake I have had countless times, as it was one of my favorite items. But, this cake? YUCK! It doesn’t even sell like a cake. And, it has a very nasty aftertaste. The texture even seems a little different. I can’t say for sure, but my guess would be this isn’t even made from scratch, but rather a mix.
I started noticing the bakery changing a couple years ago—-for instance, the Radio Bar was suddenly half the size it used to be, for the same price (or more). Other items seem to have changed, as well.
I understand that businesses have been having a hard time and sometimes their decision is to cut corners. I feel that is always the wrong decision, in my opinion. Because when the quality starts going downhill, but the prices remain the same or increase, that is a recipe for failure (pun not intended).
I just learned that the bakery changed hands a year ago. That could be the problem, or at least, part of it. I was told they still use the same recipes, but I highly doubt that, from the taste of the cake.
My friend, who was with me, bought six different items. She called today to tell me that none of them were very good.
It’s just too bad. Jackson’s used to be one of the best bakeries in Rochester. Not anymore. So, if you’re looking for a good bakery, look elsewhere. I would highly...

I ordered some cherry popovers over the phone. When I arrived, I was given cherry kuchens instead. This error was not discovered until after I had paid, but had not yet left the store. I was then told that because the cash was all ready tendered into the cash register, the difference in cost could only be refunded as store credit (?), not cash. She also said that credit was only due because I had not yet left the store. I tried to explain that the error was not my fault, but the woman refused to refund cash, nor did she apologize or accept resonsibility for the error. She also sounded like she was making up this “policy” on the spot.
On another occasion, I went to there at 8:30 am on a Saturday morning to order some frogs. I was told that they were sold out, with no offer to take an order. Luckily, another counter rep overheard my request and informed the first rep that more were being made that same day. They took my name & number and said I would be contacted when the order was ready (after 12 noon, I was told). I did not get a call until 30 minutes before the store closed, with the rep saying that the order was STILL awaiting pick up (!). I never got the first call like I was promised. I was able to pick up the items before the...
Read moreBest I've ever known, since Sibley's Department Store Bakery Dept. closed-shoppe, and this shrewd Baker bought their recipes, and a new chapter began. He may have been great before, don’t know, but now very special to me!......This is the “old-time” type bakery, you just can’t find anymore, at least not in Florida, using all-natural ingredients, and real butter, sugar and cream.
The Almond Danish Ring, to die-for. The frozen “Tea Cookies” and Petit Fours, real Cream-Puffs, real Custard Eclairs, and GIANT Easter-season frog Petit Fours…
The big Smiley Iced-cookies, that “icing“ a Sibley trademark flavor, goes back to the heyday 50's, you’re there again…varieties of cookie goodies, more and more..... Anything made of Wedding White cake, or Devil's Food, sinful...
Nothing great lasts, don’t wait till this is gone, like old Rochester in the 40's-50's-60's, too!
Rochesterians know a few good old family Italian bakeries left of this caliber, quality, taste and history, but…
Remember Herman’s German Bakery in Brighton, on Monroe Ave. in the 50’s, like that: Vanishing...
