There are a lot of things to complain about in Central New York-- the snow, the economy, etc. But now that Flour and Salt is open, we can cross a few complaints off the list. First, we now have genuinely great bagels. I mean it. Somehow, they've gotten it right. Second, we now have absolutely fantastic breakfast sandwiches-- sandwiches with duck eggs, local cheeses, meats smoked at Ray Brothers Barbecue. Add in some surprisingly reasonable prices, a gorgeous, newly renovated space, the absolute best coffee in Hamilton (courtesy of Peak Coffee in Nelson), and a kind, community-minded young owner, and you have a real winner on your hands.
The place just opened yesterday and I was already knocked out by what a great job they've done with both the space and the food. The building they've moved into has been a small engine repair shop for decades and, though a welcome presence in the community, it had been pretty run down and a bit of an eyesore. The renovations are gorgeous. And the bakery itself is clean, beautifully decorated, and welcoming.
And the food! The owner of Flour and Salt has already made a name for herself and her baking in Hamilton through her Farmers Market and catering efforts. She has been one of our best-kept secrets up until now.
Everything's good, by the way, but the bagels and sandwiches will no doubt become the star attractions. If you like an extremely hearty and delicious breakfast that will stick with you throughout the day, the RBQ is the tastiest breakfast sandwich I've ever had. I probably should've split it with someone!
If I found this place in Syracuse or Utica, I'd drive to it all the time and would plan trips to those cities so that I could grab a couple of these bagels. It's one of those rare places which just flat out makes a town better and makes a town worth driving to.
I know that really big cities have places like this, but CNY doesn't have any that I know of that match Flour and Salt for quality, vibe, and food. And at this point, given the quality, the prices are definitely "small town." Congrats on...
Read moreMy husband and I love this place and I brought my sister here twice and she enjoyed it too. She and I come down twice a week to physical therapy at Hamilton orthopedic. We couldn't wait to get out to go to Flour and Salt;for the first time an extremely unpleasant experience. My sister ordered a turkey sandwich on sourdough with the usual garnishes. She sat down and took a couple of bites complimented the bread , and then said, "there is no turkey on this sandwich"!. She took it all apart and there was not one single piece of turkey. She doesn't like to complain, but she paid $18 for a turkey sandwich with no turkey. It's almost funny (I said almost); she went back up to the counter to the girl who waited on us who said, " oh yeah, I know we were out"!WHAT?? Again, almost funny. I don't have to tell you what should have been done right from the beginning for example tell my sister we're out of turkey. She said we could give you ham .. After the fact! No compensation was offered or even a humble apology. The girl was unpleasant from the time from the start. It has never been like this here! The young ladies who have waited on us have been marvelous, and the food has been equally marvelous. This was an extremely disappointing experience and embarrassing for me because I highly recommended the...
Read moreI like this cafe / bakery. The goods are delicious, but I have to say, my recent visit caused me to be puzzled as to their approach to customer service at the point of the checkout. It was a simple thing, really. I purchased 4 separate items: 1/2 dozen bagels, 2 pastries, a jar of preserves and a container of cream cheese. As I had to park quite a distance, I asked if the items could be put together in one bag. The young lady checking me out pointed to a stack of different sized bags three steps from her on a little shelf unit, and said, "sure, there they are". So, aware of the line of people in back of me, I felt hurried to put away my change, handle my wallet, my phone used for a gift certificate, gather up the 4 different items / packages and transfer them to the other counter, as she stood watching me. After watching me struggling a bit, and perhaps realizing the awkwardness of my situation, she then, in what I considered to be begrudgingly, picked up the jar and cream cheese container and transferred them over for me. As I walked away, I wished I hadn't placed the $1 in the tip jar. But the bagels - they were delicious. Next time, and there definitely will be a next time, I'll bring along a...
