Maxwells Chocolates & Ice Cream — Restaurant in Town of Hamilton

As a local Maxwells was always my favorite childhood candy store to go to; they had tons of candy to choose from, incredible ice cream choices and the workers were always so helpful but my recent trip there was so much different than I remember.

To start, the ice cream is Gilligan’s which is great! We love and support them all the time but I would much rather go to Gilligan’s and get a burger or their amazing chicken sandwich and have an ice cream there instead, especially with everyone in town selling it by the pint now. It seems pointless to me to have something everyone else has, but it is exciting that Gilligan’s can expand!

The truffles changed recently and even though I was hesitant I decided to give them a try because they were so cute and were recommended, but they just simply miss the mark. The flavor is ok, but that is about it, they are just ok. Their bulk candy was a bit stale as well and I had to put my gloved hand in their candy bin which seemed pretty unsanitary to me, even though I was reassured it was the “recommended practice during COVID”. Their candy can be bought much, much cheaper at price chopper or a dollar general. I remember coming in when I was younger and seeing so many different options that you couldn’t buy just anywhere but we’re forced to buy it from here if we want to shop local.

I also noticed the prices went up a little bit since my last visit which is to be expected as business changes and with COVID being a lingering pest, but paying over $5 for a smoothie that is made with sorbet instead of real fruit is super disappointing, especially since the flavor isn’t as good as to be expected. When I inquired about them being made with sorbet I was given the usual pitch about how the sorbet is from Gilligan’s and it’s great, which is true, it is, but it’s not smoothie material in my opinion. But Fojo Beans just came out with their smoothies and those are incredible! Smoothies aside, there’s a really small selection when it comes to vegan options compared to the other amounts of candy they have which is super disappointing as well. My best friend is Vegan so I ran right to Maxwells to get her a gift, but I ended up leaving without anything vegan because the options were so miniscule.

But despite everything else, what really got me was how much their customer service has changed. It went from being personable and caring to getting in and out as quickly as possible and nobody is that friendly anymore. I’m so disappointed in the way they handle questions about their products and how they attempt to upsell you on everything, which is why I bought the truffles I previously mentioned that the person swore were amazing. But also, the girls do not wear their mask behind the counter when customers aren’t in the store? When I came in, they were scrambling to get them on and didn’t even bother to wash their hands after putting on the mask? I get it, wearing a mask your entire shift is awful and they are not comfortable, but to not wash your hands is disgusting and is something that should be done normally without Covid even being a thing.

Long story short, their product has gone downhill and provide ice cream you can get anywhere, the workers are not friendly and seem to have a sales pitch about all their products, they lack an actual variety of vegan options, their smoothies are made with sorbet and not fresh fruit and they don’t seem to clean as well as they used to as the outside tables were both dirty and there was ice cream melted on the floor as if someone dripped but they didn’t even bother to wipe it up.

There’s so many other negative things I could say but my review is already long enough, I don’t recommend that you support...

Maxwells not only has delicious truffles, chocolate, candy and ice cream, but you can pre-order cakes for special occasions! I pre-ordered a 60th Wedding Anniversary cake for 25 people. Jenn exceeded my expectations by making a vanilla 4 layer cake with butter cream frosting, fresh flowers on top and on the side, wrote our message top with lavender colored frosting and even included a delicate gold 60th cake topper! The cake was enjoyed by all and I received many compliments about how tasty it was and questions about where I ordered it. This is the best and amazing place to get wonderful chocolates and milkshakes and much more. It's my 3rd visit this week and I cannot ever get bored of it! I would highly recommend this place.. They have all the good stuff here... The ultimate is one of my favorite ❤ I make it a point to visit this store everytime I come to Hamilton every week. You guys are doing a great job!!
