Excellent service, nice atmosphere, fair prices food good.
I ordered the pork souvlaki pita sandwich for $9 as well as an al la carte lamb skewer for $5.50 and the Greek rice. I considered the small Greek salad for $10.50 but opted out because it seemed expensive for a small salad. The nice server said it is quite big but said there is no side salad portion. While I was waiting for my food I saw the small salad come out and it looked well worth the price and as she said was quite generous. I would order next time. I was excited to get my order because when I requested the meat cooked medium, she said sure! That is a good sign! Who likes overcooked pork! Tells me they appreciate the risk/benefit of serving quality pork! YES I would be hesitant to request this at an average establishment in the city and only ask for pork medium when I know the restaurant is a good one. Got my food...
PORK SOUVLAKI PITA SANDWICH 8/10 PROS: The souvlaki pita was just gorgeous! Huge fresh bountiful and full of fresh greens!!! A salad in itself! The pita nicely oiled and warmed, the meat itself, soft as butter!!! and just medium...so happy. Tzatziki sauce was applied to pita first so the open end wasn't anchored as I am used to so lettuce was floating off onto plate. Tomatoes fresh cut, beautiful purple onion and lots of it the way I like it!
CONS: The tzatziki sauce seemed store/restaurant supplier bought and had a mayonnaise-y goopy texture. A FAGE with garlic, S+P and lemon then drizzled on top of the lettuce would have make this special! So easy to do!? Good Greek Food NEEDS authentic Tzatziki! Not a place to cut corners. The meat although cooked to perfection, and I mean perfection, was under seasoned. It seemed salt brined because of the tenderness but needed garlic/lemon/oregano/S+P marinade also. I really wished the meat tasted more authentic and flavorful to wake up the beautifully simplicity of the pita and vegetables! lastly the meat. The grill needs daily scrubbing. I understand the flavor that a good kebab needs from the grill BUT there is a point where an acrid, charred HEAVY overtone is not only unpleasant and un appetizing but seemingly carcinogenic. Don't get me wrong, a good char is essential but...The fact that the marinade was not wet and there was no oil or sugar on the meat when it hit the super hot grill meant that the only thing charring was the protein of the meat which isn't the way to go. The vaporizing of the wet marinade and slow caramelization as the meat cooks is critical IMHO.
OTHER: The Greek rice was just ok. Boiled with celery and carrot and chicken powder if I were to guess tasted and felt like cafeteria level. A wonderful, properly prepared lemon/paprika rice along with slow cooked GREEK lemon garlic potatoes would have been a great side to the other wise EXCELLENT food!
Hope this establishment can UP their game. The kitchen definitely has talent but just need to push it up a notch! More customers...
Read moreWe had such a great experience at Athena Gyro Greek Taverna in Lagrangeville. From the moment we walked in, everything felt warm, welcoming, and well-run.
We started with the Feta in Phyllo with honey and sesame—crispy, creamy, sweet, and savory all in one bite. The hummus was smooth and fresh, served with warm pita that was perfect for dipping. For mains, we had the Pastitsio and Spanakopita, both of which were flavorful and clearly made with care. Everything tasted fresh and homemade, and the meals even came with a crisp Greek salad, which was a nice touch.
The service was excellent—friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We especially appreciated that the owner or manager made the rounds in the dining room, checking in with every table to make sure everything was going well. That personal touch really stood out.
The restaurant itself was very clean and comfortable, and the atmosphere was casual but charming. Prices were very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes—we definitely felt like we got great value.

Calamari was a bit overdone, chewy but tasty, gyro meat delicious, tender. Lamb shank stew w/orzo celery, carrots and light tomatoes extremely tender, delicious, grilled salmon, rice and saute broccoli w/ garlic was superb. Expresso and homemade cookies topped the palette. ATHENA Gyro gives big portions, unlike the other Greek restaurant in Kingston leaves you hungry, but ATHENA your leaving satisfied until the next visit. So if your returning or going to n.y.c stop by your palette won't disappoint. $$$ Athena charges a service fee to use your credit card,I believe this is illegal per my credit card co.I question waitress and her response was...
