Roast Sandwich House — Restaurant in Town of North Hempstead

Fantastic food, but frustratingly never open on time.

I do early morning shifts (typically 5-1) as an electrician at Winthrop Hospital nearby, and my break for food usually falls between 8-9am, and I stumbled upon Roast one morning and decided to swing by and try it out for breakfast, and WOW!

The food (particularly the southwest breakfast) is delicious and fresh, the staff friendly, and the store clean. I’ve been frequenting about once or twice a week ever since.

However, within the last few months I’ve noticed the store opening later and later in the morning despite the official hours listed as 8am-8pm.

And I don’t mean 8:03, 8:05, or 8:10, because that would be perfectly acceptable every now and then. I’ve worked in the food business and I’m human, I can understand a few minutes here and there, we’ve all ran a little behind a few times in our lives.

But recently it’s been more like 8:25, 8:30, and today the most egregious at 8:42. As someone who only has an hour or so break my time is precious. I’ve been left standing outside waiting for someone to let me in every single time I’ve come here in the last 2 months, and It’s getting ridiculous.

Dare I say the person answering the phone is in professional. After telling the first person who answered the phone my name and that it was for a takeout order, I was told to hold, the phone was not on mute so I heard her joking around with her co-worker. A second person the. Picked up the phone in mid conversation with co-worker, it was not clear who she was speaking to and I got a yo hello response. Used the app to order ahead 15 mins before I was going to get there. Show up and there’s nothing waiting on the pick up rack and no one in sight. I hear their computer ringing. Girl comes out front looks at the computer and the ringing that’s been going off for 15 mins is my order. Had to wait an additional 10 mins for my food which totally killed the point of me ordering ahead. Wasn’t too happy about that since I missed my train.

Edit: This has to be my least favorite location. They open at 8Am, there’s never anyone up front to take an order. Online ordering doesn’t start until 9am for some reason. All the surfaces are sticky, not what they’re cleaning with but it leaves a residue for sure.
