The Sweet Basil — Restaurant in Town of Tully

I was recommended to this restaurant from a client of mine. I made reservations, arrived at my reservation time and was promptly seated. Upon entering it was a nice decor, almost seamed like half a pizza shop and the other half was casual dining. It took almost 15 minutes for a waitress to greet us and take a drink order. Another 15 minutes for her to come back and take a food order, although she was very sweet. We ordered the sampler appetizer, surf and turf, and shrimp scampi. We were not allowed to sub any salads for the house salad that comes with the meal and was charged full price for the salad of our choice. The appetizer came with breaded fried mushrooms, onion rings, and spinach dip. Presentation of the appetizer was a D minus, the food looked and tasted like they opened up a bag of freezer products, threw it in a fryer and with oil still dripping tossed it in a fast food basket with some wax paper. The spinach dip was bland and tasted like it was from a can. The only tasty item on this sampler was the BAJA homemade dipping sauce, which i was not allowed to know the main ingredients says the waitress, Thank God I didn't have a food allergy.

Before finishing our pizza shop style appetizers, we were bombarded with the salads. Pecan with leafy greens, cranberries and feta crumbles. I must admit this salad was good. Probably the best part of the meal. About halfway through our salads, here comes the main entrees. With no apologies the waitress attempted to put the plates down as we are mid bite of our salads. We thought which was rude.

Now on to the entrees, can any one say just shy of hospital food. The surf and turf was a 8 oz petite sirloin (asked for medium) and broiled shrimp. Came out well done and was more like Bland shoe leather and rubbery shrimp. Mashed potatoes looked good except the canned beef gravy on top, they were soupy and Bland. Also a side of coleslaw which looks like it had been sitting for a week. For the Shrimp Scampi, it was a pound of angel hair pasta drenched in butter and parsley, super bland with 5 rubbery shrimp on top that spent way to much time in the broiler.

This was recommended as a Casual Dining Restaurant. This place is a half step up from a pizza place. The food was bland, the wait staff (by the way looked like they were in high school) were way more interested in their cell phones and the local kids from the high school to be bothered with clearing away any dishes or a table that had finished 20 minutes prior with food still on the table. I have not been so disappointment in a restaurant as I am with my recent experience at Sweet Basil! This was the first time that I had visit the restaurant in a could of years, since my first visit I always raved about how great of a dining experience it was. However, after tonight another word of praise will never come from me again about this establishment. We waited almost 15 mins to be seated and basically got silverware and menus thrown at us and told to find a seat on the patio on the far side. Okay, get it busy so we follow directions. Once our food was ordered we literally waited over an hour! I want to tell you that we ordered some amazing meals and that they took extra time to cook- that is NOT the case. Literally an burger, calzone and chicken parm sub. In the time it took to receive our food we never saw our waitress, she never came to see how we were or if we needed drinks, if we had she would have known that we were empty well before our food arrived. Once our food did arrive, only after I finally went and asked about the status, my onion rings were still partially frozen, the calzone did not come with sauce, and no refills on drinks, even after they were requested. We were also clearly not the only ones with frustration of the service and wait time. For we were the first ones to get food in the entire time that we were seated out on the patio and that includes people that were seated before us. We even witnessed another table’s pizza come out and it be completely wrong and they originally sent it back. Then once they realized the wait it was going to be to receive the correct order they accepted the mistake! There was no apologize for the wait! We loved the food, but absolutely HATE the service! This is the second time we have been and would like to continue to go but the servers have no care in the world! It was a very slow night when we went, maybe a total of 6 tables and a couple bar guest so I feel like there was no excuse for our servers slow 2 hour service. We were sat right away, took a few minutes to be greeted and got our drinks. We weren't ready to order when she brought our drinks so she said she would give us a few minutes, didnt realize that would have been atleast 15-20 minutes. In the waiting time I watched her walk by our table(never looked at us) a few times, watched her use the bathroom, chat to people in the kitchen, eat some food, mean while we still sat there with 3 kids and no food! Finally she comes over, we got an appetizer(hoping that would be out in a few minutes to tie the kids over until their meals came) 2 dinners that came with salads and 2 kids meals. Well 20 minutes go by and we dont have our appetizer yet, or the salads, and the 3 tables that walked in after us(2 that were hers) had there salads within 5 minutes of putting thier order in!! Finally she brings us our salads after 30 minutes from placing our order, appetizer came out shortly after that, then she proceeds to talk to a table behind us for 20 minutes after she cleared our table and told us our food will be out in just a minute. Did I mention that I saw another sever take two prescription bottles for someone at one of her tables and took whatever was in them!!!
