The restaurant has been open for 6 weeks now. We decided to stop for breakfast (my son and I). We hadn't been around in a while and were surprised to see this place open under a new name, but figured we'd give it a try. The waitress was fine, she had obvious frustrations with the kitchen staff as you could overhear conversations. The atmosphere was okay, the old diner got a fresh coat of paint and had a new feel.
The food however left room for improvement. I shared my concerns with the waitress upon leaving and asked her to share my thoughts with the kitchen. When I go to a "diner" type establishment that serves breakfast, I expect real homefried potatoes. You can see in the pictures, they were "hotel potatoes". And that small dish was a side, I paid extra for - was highly disappointed.
The omelet and English muffin were plated as basically as can be. And you'll notice something missing from the omelet. Cheese! Isn't that a main omelet staple? Here it is not! Halfway through my meal I heard the waitress scolding the kitchen staff for not putting cheese in someone's western omelet. Cheese is a binder. I cut open my omelet and you can see the results in the pictures.
3.99 for a fountain drink, 2.99 for a cup of coffee! Breakfasts were 12.99 for the omelet and 2 eggs, 3 bacon, potatoes and toast was 10.99. Extra side of potatoes 3.99. Prices were so so but the lack of cheese and not great potatoes made it feel like I was overpaying.
Won't be headed back, at least for breakfast. Looks as though other reviewers enjoy the Mexican food, maybe my expectations were too high? I didn't know this was a "chain" either....don't see many changes forthcoming but I hope so for other...
Read moreRun don’t walk, for the best Mexican cuisine you will find in Central New York. Stopped in today after parking at the truck stop next door. Melissa immediately greeted me and seated me at a table. First thing I notice is the beautifully hand painted seat backs, each depicting Mexican heritage. I was given chips and salsa immediately and asked for queso fundito on the side. The salsa is thick and not watered down like most places and the taste was perfection. The queso fundido came out with three flour tortillas and it may take the record for best I’ve ever had. I ordered the Burritos Mexicanos which is two burritos of your choice (chicken, steak, or one of each!). It comes with onions, peppers, and tomatoes. Guac salad on the side with refried beans and rice, burritos are topped with burrito sauce and queso. I’m not a beans guy so I asked for double rice instead which wasn’t an issue. When it came out, my eyes lit up lol. Huge portion for the money! I melted in the booth with the first bite. I ate the whole thing and it was amazing.
I’m sad to see Magee Diner closed but boy am I happy something just as delicious and family oriented took its place. Monterrey Mexican Grill is definitely worth the stop whether you’re a trucker or family traveling through....
Read moreWe didn't get to eat inside the restaurant yesterday, unfortunately. We had too much stuff to do, as we were cleaning our truck and doing laundry. We will definitely eat in next time.
The atmosphere was very warm and inviting and very Mexican-esque...beautiful.
The service was great! The guy who took our order, we should have gotten his name, didn't just take our order and walk away. He was so friendly and inquisitive of us and offered things to try. It truly felt like we were guests in his home.
The food...omg the food! We have had some really amazing Mexican food in this country, but this restaurant is at the very top!!! Top 3!!! That's saying a LOT bc we have eaten at so many!!! Every chance we get. Lol
Highly recommend!!!
FOR TRUCKERS: it's within walking distance of all 4 truck stops in the area. If you bobtail, you can park in the parking lot. Plenty of room on the gravel lot. Parking is for...
