Read moreI tend to only bother to write a review if it's 4 or 5 stars, this is not one of them... Was in a mood for a burger and a nice beer and she wanted something healthy and thought we would give the CA Grill a try. Not too many options that are not chains in vestal area and there were only a couple cars 2pm on that Sunday (the parkway itself was busy). This place has a ton of potential, great location and easy parking with lots of space inside.
I thought a local (non-chain) place might of had some local beers, but the taps were the standards with a Sam seasonal and a black coconut and chocolate of some brand I did not know, but I guess it's trying. Sadly only a couple standard options in bottles, but oh well, let's get to the reason I came, food...
They have several bar-b-q choices of brisket and chicken, but I didn't want to order something that needs to start cooking hours before when there were only a few other people there and didn't know how fresh it would be. They have a few burger options and I got the bar-b-q one with smokey bbq sauce. It was basically a VERY watery Carolina style sauce that did little to help the pre-made / once frozen patty with the dried out bun. My SO got the fish tacos and paid extra for "Mahi". Mahi needs to be in quotes as it was so dry from freezing (and probably refreezing) that I've had much better fishsticks from the school cafeteria. Changing an extra $3 for this is downright insulting and is really the reason I took the time to write this review. My SO who tends to like just about anything took one bite of one of the three small tacos and set it down not sure if she wanted anymore. I tried one of the other ones and because I wasn't enjoying the dried out burger much, I thought I would get some protein, however, half way through I could go no further. Pressed tuna right from the can would have been SOOOOOO much better and probably a lot juicer. Even the corn tortilla was old and dry. They had some flavorless sauce and a little lettuce. Even if they had quality fish in them, they never should have been on a menu. We ended up splitting the rest of the soggy burger and resolved to be good going to the grocery store still hungry.
The waitresses were all nice.
The menu was really big and I could only leave thinking they needed to cut out 75% and figure out how to make just a few things and...
Read moreThe upbeat music playing when you walk in is to distract you from the lousy food and poor service you're going to experience here. The food had no flavor, everything tasted like it was frozen and microwaved upon ordering. I ordered the chicken enchiladas, while people in my party ordered the cheesesteak sandwich & a half rack of ribs. The person that ordered the cheesesteak said that it was cold upon biting into it (like it was the first dish made and just sat to the side, not under a heat lamp), the ribs, while tender, had absolutely no flavor. Cooking with bar-b-que sauce does not substitute proper seasoning. Also the side of "smoked mac & cheese" left alot to be desired. No flavor and topping it with bacon just made it extra greasy. Also the cheeses used in the smoked mac & cheese were either not a good mix, or poor quality ingredients, or both. Regarding the service, we definitely were not the priority, despite the dining room being empty at 4pm on a Wednesday. Nobody in our party received refills on their fountain sodas. Even if the refills weren't free, we still would've liked another drink to wash the horrible taste of their food out of our mouths. Once we were seated at a table, we felt like a burden on the staff, which given how empty the place was, you would think they would be happy for something to do. The table they sat us at was sticky, but the other booths appeared otherwise occupied, despite nobody being there. Even when ordering, it seemed rushed like the staff couldn't be bothered. After this horrible experience, we will not be returning, especially after spending $100 for 3 people and 3 beverages (only 1 was alcohol, the other 2 were regular fountain sodas). After leaving, we ended up hitting the drive thru because we were THAT unsatisfied. Clearly this place is only open to please people with a mediocre palate since no real foodie would...
