What a gem - literally a diamond in the rough of Lawrenceville Highway. Been driving by this place for two years now and finally went there with some friends tonight. Clearly undiscovered by many, seating was at our discretion and several options of bar, high top, table, or booth were available - all at varying degrees of distance from a gentleman (Swami) performing on the raised dias at the far end of the large open space. The live music was lively but appropriate, and played well to the space.
The waiter (the bartender in our case) came over and welcomed us with great conversation about the restaurant and went into a great selection of beers - providing samples of some that we weren't too certain of. He was rowdy yet knowledgeable and attentive - the perfect compliment to this dining experience.
Then came the menu. Shorty's the name, and pizza's the game, but don't let that put you off if your not in for a pie, because the plates are to die for. Our party had three sandwiches and two pizzas between the 4 of us, and they were a-mazing. The focaccia bread was the perfect vehicle for what myself and others described as the best Ruben, Chicken Sandwich, and Turkey Club they had ever had, each with notes and flavors that someone back in the kitchen has spent countless hours pairing.
One of my favorite aspects was when I asked what sides the 'plates' came with - I was greeted with a simple 'they come with what they come with'. This, to me, is perfection and a sign that I am somewhere where a chef is proud of what they're doing - they want you to receive a dish in its completeness, and that's exactly what I and my fellow diners got. Each meal paired with an appropriate side that complimented the focal point.
Did I mention that I couldn't pass up the opportunity to order a pizza we didn't need? Well I did, and there it sat - a centerpiece on the table. A conglomeration of unexpected items combined on a delightfully thin yet hearty crust, cooked just right in the impressive pizza oven I'd glanced upon entering the restaurant.
We'd often considered that mixing x with y and putting them on a pizza would be good, but the execution is hard when not available in a grocery freezer case. Shorty's is where you can come to experience x, y, z, and more on your pizza. All in intentional, yet [again] unexpected ways.
By this point, the evening had come to a crescendo and with it the music. More people had come and gone, seating was a little tighter, and we were talking a little louder - whether to the thank of the din, the music, or the beer I'm not sure, but it was just fine because it was nothing short of a fantastic evening with great friends, great music, great service, and most of all great food.
I can't...
Read moreCame here with a few co-workers around 11:15a, and we didn't realize that they don't open until 11:30a. This was an oversight on my part. There was an older couple that arrived 2 mins before we did, and the man was walking with the help of a cane. Instead of happily inviting us in to sit down for the wait, they kicked us all out and locked the door. Very unappealing and uninviting. The older couple decided not to stay, and drove off. Our group of 6 stayed, and waited outside, right in front of the door. When they finally opened the door at 11:29ish, we found our way to some seats, and had to push the tables together for our group. The tables were dirty from the previous night, so I wiped them down with a napkin. The atmosphere was okay. I was surprised to see a sign at the front door stating "Smoking permitted in designated areas only".
Regarding the food. I didn't realize that all the pizzas were served on thin crust by default, unless you ask for thicker crust. I am not really a fan of crust that is thinner than a slice of pepperoni. It makes it seem you are eating pizza on a napkin, as the dough flops down and the toppings all fall off. I guess I am not a fan of the wood fired pizza, either. The bottoms of the pizzas were all "dirty" and appeared as if they were covered in ashes. I had to constantly wipe all the black soot off my fingers. There is no medium pizza, only a small and large. Half of us ordered the small 10" and half ordered the large 14" pizzas. When we asked for some boxes to go, they gave us 12" boxes for the large pizzas. They literally had 12" printed on the bottom of the boxes. I don't know if they were being skimpy on boxes or just brought out the wrong size boxes, but it was highly odd since they don't even offer 12" pizzas. I guess they expected us to either stack the slices on top of each other, or attempt to play Tetris and try to fit them in the boxes.
Just a side note. The parking lot is small and looks like it might fit 20 cars. All of the employees seemed to park as close to the front door as possible, instead of towards the back, like most other restaurants usually ask their employees to do. I probably would not come back to this location by myself. I am giving two stars simply because I came...
Read moreMy son and I ate at Shorty's in Tucker last night. We decided to try a new place. We walked in and it's a seat yourself place. The interior was OK kinda of old country neighborhood feel. Some ugly art on the walls with outrageous price tags on them apparently for sale, anyway we sit down at a booth and server brings us the menus. Which were printed on several sheets of different sized paper attached to a clipboard. OK original, Well it had some interesting items such as crab cakes in appetizers, salmon , steak and potatoe and last 2 large sheets were nothing but pizza. I'm pretty much pizza'd out so I ordered steak and potatoe. I didn't read the whole description. You know steak and potatoe is pretty self explanatory. Or so I thought the steak arrived on a bed of country fried potatoes with 4 asparagus spears.well this was a first for me but I kept a open mind. The steak had the same light brown/grayish color all the way around. No seer whatsoever and was bland and cold. I don't have any idea of how they cooked the steak. And the potatoes were crunchy and hard. I was totally disappointed with my meal. I hope that they make a better pizza. But I'll never know because I will not be returning to Shorty's again. As a side note my steak and my son's kids pizza came to $26 and change. I gave the waitress $40 and she asked if I needed any change back? Seriously Hun? If the food was good and your service a little better I would give a good tip but a $14 tip on a $26 dollar ticket ...You got some nerve I'll give you that.. from my firstvand only visit I do recommend that people...
