Removing the Elvis factor - 5 stars for being exactly what it states, never changed, nostalgic diner.

Example - The pimento cheese sandwich, 2 slices of lightly toasted white bread, schmear of pimento cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato. Simple and a simple price.

We also got the doughburger. I've read of slug / dough burgers before and wasn't exactly sure what to expect. I had read that the origin was a depression era method to extend meat with soy, bread etc spiced and fried.

Mentally I assumed mild beef flavor "extended". Rather, I didn't pick up any prevalent meat flavor. Ulitmately, it was more about consistency, soft-ish interior with crispy exterior. What you end up with is a good sandwich with the primary flavors being the mustard, pickle and onion on a nicely toasted bun.

One note on parking, it is a small lot and no real defined spaces. If you pull in and simply stop, you will be greeted by a "car hop" for your order and asked if you are eating inside. There wasn't parking so I dropped my wife off to pick up the order, circled the lot and then parked when a spot opened up. This caused some "you ain't from around here are ya confusion", but they were very...

We went inside to eat (they have a small area) but they also have carhops who come out & take your order. It's the oldest diner in Tupelo & the wall decor reflects that, with lots of old photos of old musicians (naturally includes pictures of Elvis). The service was great - fast, friendly & willing to answer questions. One thing they offer is a Dough Burger which we'd never heard of. Our waitress explained it's a Depression Era burger, with flour & water added to the ground beef to make the meat go further. One of us tried it & she said it was really good. One got the country fired steak with 2 sides & he said it was great. 3 of us got the chicken tender plates with 2 sides & we could have gotten 2 of them & still had chicken tenders left over! We got 4 of the biggest chicken tenders I've ever seen! We took 6 of them back to the campground! The rest of our group ordered cheeseburgers & they were good - handmade patties. If you're looking for a fun, casual dining place in Tupelo, i definitely recommend it! The prices were...

Well, this is my second time at Johnnie's, and obviously, I returned for a reason. However, this time was not so pleasant. "Prices subject to change". Take note! Now, the disclaimer states this, but you wouldn't think the price change would be so drastic. I got cheese sticks that climbed in price to $5.99! On the menu, it states that they are $3.99. You would think the person taking your order might want to mention this. Then I asked about it, and the lady taking my order caught an attitude, along with some other lady in the back. I don't understand how you can over charge someone that much for something and get mad because they would like a receipt. Needless to say, I won't be returning. I hate going places spending my money with unappreciative people. I won't. I'm pretty sure they don't care anyways, because it doesn't seem like they're too concerned with...

Other than Elvis ate here and it’s the oldest restaurant in Tupelo, you’re not missing much. Nice kid came out and took our order as soon as we walked up since the inside is closed. We didn’t know there was a menu, he just asked what we wanted so we just said some random stuff. Sat down and saw a menu on the table. Lol. My husband had the dough burger and it tasted just like that. Flour. I had a BBQ sandwich which was flavorless and cold. Cold like it was stored in a fridge, not cold because it had not been heated long enough. Maybe that’s how it comes, but I’ve never had cold BBQ before. Fries came out hot and good.

Yeah boy! I'm eating lunch today where Elvis ate cheeseburgers in high school. Where did y'all eat lunch? 😄 I had a very nice chopped pork platter from a very nice lady. Add a star if you're a Elvis freak like me. I couldn't drive by Tupelo without stopping and doing something and I figure I pretty much lucked into it finding this joint basically randomly. Serendipity and all that I'm not quite sure if you can force it...
