On Friday May 2nd my family and friends went to Tustin Brewing Company and had one of the worst experiences ever. I strongly discourage the community from giving them any money until major changes are made. The main trigger of all of this is the smoking on the patio. Some back story. I called and asked if dogs were allowed on the patio, was told yes they were. My husband called back while we at a kids baseball game to make a reservation for 9 people, including 3 kids, an elderly mother, and our dog on the patio. We arrived at the restaurant around 8pm. Yes, it was very busy, but we were sat pretty quickly. That’s about where it being good ended. We placed our orders and things went downhill from there. While waiting for our drinks and food we noticed a table smoking cigarettes. We asked our server and he told us the 2 tables in the back are allowed to smoke because they are 20 feet from the door. I’ve never heard of this. But we were with our kids and tried to make the most of it. It just kept getting worse. More and more people kept joining the smokers, not just cigarettes, cigars, cloves, and vaping. We were very uncomfortable. I asked if we could move inside with our dog. We were told no. While this was happening the service was also horrible. Water got spilled and we had to get our own towels to clean it up. Our kids had water that never got refilled. The kids were starving as we kept waiting and waiting for our food. Finally, a little over an hour from waiting we had to move. Our party of 9, again 3 kids and also my friends elderly mother, moved our own tables and chair to try and get away from the overwhelming smoke. Our server and the bartender who was assisting him were very aware of how uncomfortable we were. We finally got our food, an hour and a half later. My son’s food and one of our other friends’ food were wrong. At that point my son was so hungry he just ate it. As we all quickly ate our food to get out of the horrible situation I saw an empty table for the boys to go sit at inside. It’s extremely sad when your child says to you, “Finally, fresh air!” We were all so disgusted by the amount of smoke and disregard, I put down a card and paid for the whole table. We did not have the time or patience to split the bill. Our server brought back the check, and didn’t even bring me an itemized receipt. Again, at that point we were all so upset and grossed out, we just wanted out of there. Us parents were trying to keep our cool in front of our kids. Later I called and asked to speak to the manager. I was told she was gone for the night. I spoke with the main lead. I told him about the situation. His response was, “Ya, it’s a smoking patio.” And that was about it. I asked him to have the manager call me the next day when she got in. Mind you, when we got home both my husband and I had headaches and our stomachs were upset from the amount of smoke we had to sit through. The next day I called and spoke with the manager Anna. She is the only positive thing about this whole experience. She felt horrible and was truly empathetic. She had no idea this was happening while we were there. I was told we were supposed to be told it was a smoking area. We clearly were not. Again, she was the only positive light in this situation.
For a local restaurant to have a smoking patio is disgusting. To have tables out there with children is a pure disregard for public safety and health. This restaurant does not care about health or safety, it is clear with their ownership and employees. There was absolutely no mention or signs that smoking is allowed. I highly urge everyone to boycott this establishment until changes have been made. A year ago I watched my father pass away from lung disease. This restaurant is only adding to that disease and...
Read moreEqual part brewery, restaurant and sports bar. It's hard to consider them a typical brewery because of the food menu and an abnormal amount of televisions playing sports. Been around a while.
Set up in the outskirt, but more historical part of Tustin, it's tucked away in the corner of a white walled building it looks more like a wine bar or brunch café from the outside.
Parking is not ideal due to shared lot, 1 way in and out that's on a light and just poor ergonomics, spots are a little tight.
I know most of this doesn't matter that much to the typical hop head just looking for good beer, but this isn't taphunter or untapped where it's just about the beer.
I'm used to mingling with minimal seats in an open area versus segregated from the restaurant. Tall stools, tight area and a pretty old crowd. Not your usual Craft boom babies. Some old salty dogs meeting up for weekly drinks. I fully expected the food to overpower the restaurant, but I was barely hungry, must be good ventilation.
They have 6-12 house beers on tap and another 6-12 local and craft beers as well (my recent trip had pliny, belching and other pretty famous breweries), but seeing as I come from the Craft Mecca I actually only hadn't had their house beers, not surprising though. No flight board, no flight carrier, just put in order in front of me top to bottom, left to right. I'm an IPA man so favoring the double IPA wasn't surprising (reminds me of kismet from Mother Earth). I'm not going to go too into the beers because like I said that's not the whole place and there are better sites for that. Price was pretty decent at $2 and change per taster ended up being just under $17 for 8 4oz tasters. I found them overall a little strong, but not under rated on ABV like some smaller breweries.
Décor is brick inside with TV's lining all walls, standard tables and chairs keep it open in the restaurant side. Very Pizza Portish. Service is generally good, can be slow due to understaffing. The brewery area is usually handled well, restaurant area is ok, but I've seen the kitchen get swamped. The menu is definitely more gluteny and socal and not Italian, but pretty extensive. I stikc with the basics like the lemon heights chicken, fish and chips. The chili chees fries are hearty, TBC sampler is great for sharring, I'm not a fan of the wings. Nachos have beans, really? Ahi teaser is Cajun ahi, will catch you off guard. Good onion rings and poppers, well breaded and fried. The sandwiches are pretty popular, but not during HH. Hickory Burger is actually pretty solid, the red hill bbq sauce is good, but not deep. The onion rings, cheese and smoked bacon make it. The lemon hieghts chicken hs a great mushroom, artichoke sauce, fresh parm on top makes it pretty solid. The sausage platter would be create with cheese, but to me is the best appetizer of the bunch. Pizza's are well cooked, the dough is the weak part as the ingredients are actually pretty good.
Personally I wasn't impressed with the beer menu and the food is ok for a restaurant, good for a brewery, the TV's kill it though. To me breweries are about the people, not TV's and sports. I love both, but like to keep my beer separate. More Karl Strauss meets Hooters than I'd like. I think I'm getting to the point where it's just hard to impress me with your...
Read moreMy first ever review, never have I had such poor service. It was my first stop after I flew in from Washington, and was thirsty and excited to try some local beer. It was crowded when we arrived(3of us), but were prompty seated. We were given 1 food menu to share, no beer menus, no water.
A server came by quickly and asked to take our order. Told her we wanted more menus, and drinks. She wouldnt return for almost 15 minutes. During which I had to get another waitress just to bring us some water. And she brought us a beer menu, and took our order(we were not her table).
MY FOOD ARRIVED BEFORE MY BEER EVEN DID. For a brewery this is flat unacceptable. Beer is what the customers come for, how the business makes money. If I wanted a subpar burger I could go to McDonald's.
When my beer finally arrived I did enjoy it, but didn't dare order another because I didn't want to stay another hour and a half. The one star is for the beer, the service took away the other 4. Worst service at a taproom I...
