Chaplin’s Sports Bistro — Restaurant in Union City

This is my favorite sports bar ever for a bunch of reasons.

Good food They are experts at the deep fryer. Their mozzarella sticks turn out perfectly gooey with a crispy outside and their onion rings are delightfully crunchy. Also their garlic noodle appetizer is soooo delicious. It's just noodles with some garlic and a little cheese - how can it taste so good??? They also have a pretty tasty steak and other pastas.

Good viewing experience There are lots of tvs and pretty much every seat in the bar can see at least one of them.

Clean Normally I don't comment on the cleanliness of restaurants unless it's bad, but some sports bars are so gross that I've come to really appreciate a nice clean sports bar. The bathroom is always stocked, the floors are never sticky, and the tables are always promptly cleaned up.

Cheap At a lot of bars, especially ones in SF, you're thankful to get a $10 beer. Here you can get a pretty nice cocktail for $10 but you can also get other drinks for a lot less, especially during happy hour. You can get a whole carafe of sangria for under 10. The beer is cheap too. Good selection of beers Aside from a full bar, they also have great draft beers with a rotating tap. They even have some of my favorites on tap, like seadog blueberry or woodchuck cider. In summer they also have hell or high watermelon on tap, which is served with a whole slice of watermelon in the glass. There are rotating ipas and pale ales for those who like the bitter stuff too.

You can often find sports bars that have two or three of these features, but I've never found another sports bar that hits on all the key points (cheap, clean, good food, good beer, good tvs)....

Overall this is a decent sports bar however my overall experience was brought down because the current bartender that was there I felt like he did not give us the proper attention as a bartender should have. It started off fine he got our original order in for drinks and food as we thought. However when we were done with our first drink the bartender fails to notice that our drinks were empty until we had to flag him down and ask for another. About after maybe 30 mins ordering our food we asked where was it and the bartender said he forgot to push send. After that it came out pretty quickly. The original buffalo wings were very good and the pork lumpia was also very good so we decided to order more food off the happy order menu. We got more wings with their Hella hot wings, Agave Fuego wings and we asked to get the tater tots tossed in their garlic parmesan and the tots were amazing. However I wasn’t too impress with their hella hot wings they were hot but not that hot and they had more of an an adobe flavor to them than anything I wasn’t impressed. The Agave Fuego wings had better flavor they are more sweet than spicy, over all I enjoyed their original hot better. Food was good the atmosphere of a sports bar was there and the only thing there that lacked was the customer service which was a very big disappointment which brought my review down because of it. I’d have to say the other woman who took over was more attentive to us than the male bartender. Overall if the customer service was better I would recommend coming here I would definitely come back to try more...

Update: With the pandemic changing our social habits, I order food from this wonderful bistro at least one or twice a week and have it delivered to my home. Their packaging is great. And, the quality of the food preparation and presentation is top drawer. The food continues to be excellent and priced right. I recommend Chaplin's to anyone wanting good food, an interesting menu, and affordable prices. Update: 11-9-2022 I have ordered food from Chaplin's more than 40 times since the pandemic began. The food is fabulous, probably the best in all of Hayward and Union City combined. I have my meals delivered to me as I am still apprehensive about going into restaurants. I can tell you the recipes are unique, expertly prepared and delicious beyond compare. Tonight I ordered a small Cesare salad, garlic noodles with perfectly cooked steak, and lastly blackened brussel sprouts with honey-bourbon drizzle. Oh, my, it was so good I was sure I had died and...
