If youโre craving authentic, flavorful Pakistani cuisine, Peshawari Kabob in Union City is a hidden gem that delivers an exceptional culinary experience. Known for its robust flavors and traditional cooking, the restaurant serves up some truly unforgettable dishes.
During our visit, we ordered a range of dishes that showcased the depth of their menu.
Qeema Karahi The Qeema Karahi was a standout. A rich, spicy meat stew made with minced lamb, this dish was cooked in a wok-like karahi (a traditional round-bottomed pan), which allowed the spices to infuse the meat deeply. The minced meat was tender, absorbing the tangy, spicy tomato-based gravy beautifully. The mix of cumin, coriander, and garam masala created a deliciously aromatic experience, perfect when paired with naan or Romali Roti.
Chapli Kabob The Chapli Kabob was another highlight. These round, crispy patties were packed with flavorโspiced with crushed coriander, cumin, green chilies, and a hint of garlic, they had a slight crunch on the outside while staying juicy on the inside. The meat was perfectly seasoned, and the addition of fresh herbs gave the kabobs a refreshing note. Served with onions and a side of chutney, they were a delightful treat.
Nihari The Nihari was a comforting, slow-cooked beef stew with a deep, rich gravy. The beef was incredibly tender, falling apart with the touch of a fork. The gravy had a velvety texture, infused with a variety of spices like ginger, garlic, and garam masala, creating a warming, aromatic sauce. The dish was flavorful yet not overwhelming, making it an ideal pairing with both rice or Romali Roti.
Maash Daal The Maash Daal (black lentils) was another great addition to our spread. It was hearty and earthy, simmered in a rich, buttery gravy with subtle spices that didnโt overshadow the natural flavors of the lentils. The dal had a smooth consistency and was the perfect balance to the more intensely spiced meats we ordered.
Chicken Biryani The Chicken Biryani was aromatic and flavorful, with perfectly cooked basmati rice infused with fragrant spices. The chicken pieces were tender and well-seasoned, absorbing the layers of spices. The dish wasnโt overly greasy, and the rice was light yet full of flavor. A touch of yogurt and fresh cilantro garnished the top, enhancing the dishโs refreshing and balanced taste.
Romali Roti We rounded out our meal with Romali Roti, a soft, thin flatbread that was perfect for scooping up the flavorful curries and meats. It was delightfully light, with a slight chewiness, and was a great accompaniment to all the dishes. Its delicate texture paired well with the hearty, saucy dishes we enjoyed.
Doodh Paathi To finish off our meal, we tried the Doodh Paathi, and it was the ideal conclusion to an already incredible spread. Itโs smooth and comforting, with just the right amount of sweetness, making it an indulgent treat after the savory dishes. The Doodh Paathi was refreshing and soothing, a perfect contrast to the bold spices weโd just enjoyed.
Overall Experience Service at Peshawari Kabob was friendly and attentive. The ambiance is casual, with an authentic, no-frills atmosphere, allowing the food to truly shine. Each dish was well-prepared, generously portioned, and full of flavor, reflecting the skill and attention to detail in their cooking.
Prices are reasonable for the quality and portion sizes, offering great value for money. If youโre in the area and in the mood for delicious Pakistani food, Peshawari Kabob is definitely a must-try. The range of dishes we ordered provided a satisfying and authentic dining experience that I would...
ย ย ย Read moreWe looked up this restaurant while on our way home from a roadtrip, a first time visit for us. Place was busy for a Sunday evening, which was a good sign about food and popularity. We were seated and studied the menus, placed our order for goat karahi, a shrimp platter, naan, and soda. The seating and ambiance is minimal, nothing fancy. They had one elevated section with floor table and cushions. The ambiance transported me to restaurants I've been to on my overseas travels.
The staff dropped off the hot, fresh naan first, but no main courses for another ten min. By the time food came the naan was cold. We asked for another fresh basket, while waiting we started with the cold naan - kids couldnt wait longer. The goat karahi looked delicious, but was very tough meat and very gamey, unlike the hundreds of other times I've had the dish. On top of that there was a hair in the dish. Returned the dish and knowing the next one would most likely be chewy and gamey, we asked to replace with the chicken karahi (harder to mess up). The chicken dish looked tasty, and tasted good, but slightly undercooked and needed a pinch more salt. I was disappointed about the goat dish, knowing the region the owners are from this is one of their signature dishes.
The shrimp looked ok. First off, there were only five shrimp, which is unusual, we couldn't even equally share, and less than the picture in the menu. It was decent tasting, but not a signature dish.
Two teens were busing, and clearly did not want to interact with the diners, no refills, etc. The sole waiter never returned to ask about us returning the dish, nor any follow-up. Between all of this we had glasses of water, and hadn't noticed they never brought our sodas. We discussed the dining experience with the waiter, the issue with the naan, no refills, no soda, hair in goat dish, not cooked right, no follow-up from anyone including him, etc. He genuinely apologized, stretched thin being only waiter and cashier, the teens were still learning, etc. He offered to comp our entire bill, but we didn't feel that would be fair to them, so he ended up comping the goat dish. +1 star for him trying to make things right. The $$$ per dish I felt were slightly over priced. I would give this place another go given it seems like it has a good reputation. I'll chalk up the visit to be an anomoly, but surely will update this review after any future...
ย ย ย Read moreI am going to break this review into 3 parts; the food, the experience, and the pricing
The food: Overall, the food was pretty average. The goat was good since it seems to be a specialty here, but the chicken was less than satisfactory, with a stringy texture and lack of flavor. The situation of the kadai which came with them, is the exact opposite. The chicken kadai was overall better, with the curry tasting satisfactory(3/5), but the goat kadai(1/5)was simply goat placed atop a pile of blandly seasoned tomatoes. The best dish ordered, was the bolani, which I would rate a 5/5.The naans were also pretty good and get a 4/5 as well. The portions of the kadai were also very small.
Experience: Upon walking in, we were welcomed with no menus and had to ask for them, when the waiter came to take our orders. We then had 4 glasses given to our party of 6. We had to get the glasses ourselves, from the back of the room. This would not have been such a big deal, had the glasses been washed properly. The glasses had obvious stains on it due to being poorly washed. After asking for replacements we got slightly cleaner glasses to drink from. In addition to these issues, 1/3 of the room is taken up by a giant silver fridge, making it a very uncomfortable place to eat. I liked the accents from the Afghani culture and wish that they focused on it throughout the restaurant.
Pricing: Now pricing, is the biggest issue of them all. With all these issues mentioned above, the restaurant still could have been a 3-4/5 restaurant if the price was low-medium, like the quality. The restaurant is wildly overpriced for the quantity of food given and the appearance. $105 for 6 people is expected in a well-designed fine dining restaurant, not a restaurant with all the issues mentioned above. The goat kadai itself was around $20, with small portions(and mostly only tomatoes). We ordered 6 naans, 1 bulani,2 chicken kadai(small portions),1 goat kadai, and one chicken sheekh kebab dish for a total of $100+.
Overall I think that the food was satisfactory and definitely had room for improvement, the atmosphere and service could be improved, but the biggest issue is the price you are paying for this level of quality. The restaurant has the potential to improve, some of the food was good, and the staff...
