This Vallejo favorite, under new ownership, received some mixed reviews and experiences in the last several months. Today I decided to see for myself if this place considered to be a diamond in the rough had turned into a lump of coal.
I arrived 20 mins after they opened 11:20am and one customer was already ahead of me. As I entered I was greeted with a warm, "We'll be right with you". Behind the plexiglass case I could see all the freshly prepared ingredients, Onions, Tomatoes, freshly grated cheese and all the condiments plastic covered. Both ladies working behind the counter had gloves on, masks and hair covers. I ordered 1 tasty dog plain to inspect the quality of the bun and dog and 4 cheese dogs to enjoy. The young lady that took my order repeted it back to me and the other young lady confirmed while making it once again. I was asked if I wanted sliced or chopped onions, I chose chopped. I was asked if there was anything else I wanted and I asked for a large Sprite. When I confirmed that was all, the young lady let out a "Ready" and another employee came from the back to ring up my order. She also informed me that my plain dog would be marked "P".
I get my order home and I have to say, the hot dog had that famous snap and the bun was light , fluffy and warm. My cheese dogs were extra cheesy as everyone knows sac's is also popular for. I'm happy to report the diamond is still shining.
One thing I will add is that from all the negative reviews the owner said they would step up and address the issues and it seems they have done that. I was one of the first customers of the day so hopefully the quality and service stays high through the day. The next time I go there I'll make it a late afternoon to test...
Read moreGrowing up in Vallejo in the 70's/80's, there were 2 MAJOR joints to eat at...Bud's Burgers and Sac's Tasty Dogs. I'll get to Bud's next week. Arriving at 12:15pm, the line was well out the door, and once inside your senses go into overload as your eyes take in the stunning decor, and your nose the aromas of the promises to follow. For beginners...the wieners are huge and slow cooked in water, the buns are steamed to perfection. ALL are made to your satisfaction with freshly sliced/diced onions, sliced tomato, relish, and other toppings, mustard, mayo, and ketchup. I ordered the Basic Dog (sliced onions & tomatoes, relish, and mustard) and the Super Chili Cheese Dog (both pictured). These are full length, piled high with ingredients. The cheese is freshly shredded cheddar, the chili made everyday. And since 1st opened in 1976, nothing has changed except the prices!! They also serve a Cheese Dog w/12oz of cheese, and a Cajun Dog with jalapeños. All can be had either ala cart, or with chips and drink. There IS a reason this establishment is consistently voted Best in County...visit once and you'll see why! Just come with a...

When I first arrived, the line was out the door. Don't worry, it moves fast.
They make your dogs to right in front of you and you can choose from a preset menu or you can make your own. I got the original but with a hot link, added Mayo and ketchup. Also got a chili cheese dog with everything.
Both were about 5 - 6 bucks. That's it. In a world that charges for sauce, I was so pleasantly surprised with the price and the quality ingredients.
The chili cheese dog was awesome. The hot dog itself is a normal size, and it didn't fill the bun, but it tasted great. The chili was good, not salty as normal places - so you know that they made this and it wasn't from out of a can. They stacked the freshly grated cheese with onions and tomatoes and some mustard. OMG that was so good.
The hot link was great.. had a good crunch and the ingredients are spot on. Loved it.
Wonderful customer service with a smile and awesome place. I'm from Walnut Creek, and will travel this far to get a Sac...
