Visited here for the first time today. Food is excellent. Portions are enormous. Both my girlfriend and I are getting two meals out of it. I had the Texas Combination Plate that was two enchiladas, carne guisada, rice, beans and a nice homemade tortilla. I can't tell you how the enchiladas were because I was stuffed to the gunwales from the guisada, rice, beans and tortilla. The guisada was delicious. I didn't even eat that many chips. Girlfriend had chicken verde enchiladas that were topped with a very generous portion of sliced avocado, plus the rice and beans. That's easily a second meal for her too. They get the basics correct: rice and beans were both good. The salsa with the chips is zippy, but the kind of zippy that sneaks up on you and so you don't realize your mouth is on fire until it's too late! All this for under $13 for my meal, and I think around $11 for hers. Really excellent value! The decor is exactly what you would expect in the "Family-run Mexican Hole In The Wall Restaurant" style. They are only open until 2, although there is a very full menu for breakfast and lunch and what would seem to be dinner entrees. They open at 5:30 so they are serving all those guys who get up early and go into work before the sun comes up. Will have to come back and try the...
Read moreThis place doesn't pull any punches. Cinco de Mayo is a restaurant that makes you wish every day was May 5th.
There's no room for flavor text in this review. It's just a really, really good restaurant. Quality, traditional Mexican cuisine at a great value.
The rice and beans were flavorful, and the enchiladas verdes I ordered were quite good, but what I really appreciated about it was how distinct the verde sauce was.
And it's interesting because I just tried an enchiladas verdes at a local restaurant, El Patron, and I didn't like theirs; everything was just kind of muddled together in an oily mess. Eating the Enchiladas Verdes at Cinco de Mayo, I was thinking, "This is what they're supposed to taste like; you can taste the individual flavor beats of the chicken and the tortilla, the cheese and sauce. They don't overpower each other; they lift each other up."
I thought my review on El Patron was harsh, but eating at Cinco de Mayo confirmed that there is better Mexican food out there and at a greater value, and it's right here at Cinco de Mayo. Hot, fresh food that tastes like it came out of someone's home kitchen. It's comfort food, really.
Easy 5 Stars. Whatever you guys are doing there, please keep it up. This is a new regular...
Read moreFood is slightly above average Mexican food in this town, terrible service. I had to ask for silverware for us. Our waitress refilled other tables drinks but not ours. I asked for no cheese and got cheese. I didn't complain since we had waited a bit for food and they were busy, just picked it off. All of this is fine and tolerable since it was busy, I get it when mistakes happen during rush hour. None of this would have warranted a bad online review. However, I went up to pay and my waitress and her coworker rolled their eyes and ignored me. I left and let my husband pay and they waited on him. I used to be a waitress and can tolerate a lot and am always respectful and understanding. This is honestly the first time I've ever had truly bad and rude service in this town. I don't understand why I was treated this way but I won't be back as I didn't feel welcome and the vibe was...
