So, pro tip: If you’re not familiar with the Mount Kisco area, particularly Kroger Street, have the Passport Parking app already downloaded on your phone, as all the parking is metered. Park in the lot in the back and you’ll have direct entrance to the bakery. Parking in front can be a tad confusing.
Now on to Bella’s. Bella’s by far, has probably the best tasting croissant that I’ve ever had. They’re well baked with just the right amount of butter and the layers don’t overtake the flavors inside.
I ordered a Crème Brûlée croissant not knowing exactly what to expect beyond Crème Brûlée in its dessert form. The toasted cream on the outside of the croissant was delicious and the custard filling was a great compliment to the croissant’s layers. Personally, I would have liked a more sugary flavor with more “toasted” elements. Everything tasted great, but I wouldn’t automatically label it as “Crème Brûlée.”
All of the croissants in the display looked amazing and it was hard to choose just one. They all seem like unique spins in what can be a “repetitive” mishmash of what bakeries typically offer.
I personally found the menu behind the counter hard to read as the print was small and the menu was electronic. I felt the screens flashed too quickly to get an idea of what you were reading and subsequently ordering.
I was also disappointed that the coffee was fairly basic. While I’m all for a great pastry, if I’m going to travel for a “ unique breakfast experience,” it would be nice to have options beyond a standard cappuccino or latte with no additional flavor options. I opted for a Chamomile Tea which was fine, but it would have been nice to have a separate bar where I could add how much honey or milk I want that suits my liking.
The people working seemed nice overall and Bella’s even had a few tables to sit at that just felt “okay.” The seating area didn’t give me the “high end” bakery vibe. Regardless, their prices are incredibly reasonable and I’m happy to support a local business that deliveries quality products and has a...
Read moreThe baker has promise, but he has a lot to learn. I hope he will survive in that spot, but I am not optimistic. He opened a shop in a very bad location, inside a hardly traveled mall. It's hard to find and since retail is all about "location, location, location" that was a bad move. The bread was acceptable and even good. It tasted fine, but it is too spongy and has no body consistency. It is hard to cut because of that. The price was on the high end, but tenable. At $10 per loaf that places the bakery above the price of far superior bakeries including Bread Alone in Rhineback and Woodstock and Le Pain Quotidien in Greenwich, CT. Local bakeries that are comparable, the Brewster Pastry and the Pawling Bread Company, are also less expensive and at least equally good. The baker touts his superior ingredients, but all the good artesian bakeries now offer the same quality standard. The worst practice is that the baker uses plastic bags to hold his bread, which anyone who knows artesian bread knows to be an absolutely poor practice. Good bakeries use wax bags or paper bags. Grocery stores use plastic, which make the bread soggy and stale faster. People who buy grocery store bread for $3 don't care, but I do when I pay $10. In Europe you would never see that. People know better. It's actually shocking to see how much plastic he uses, which is environmentally unacceptable when you pay premium. I really do wish him well, but until he changes his environmental consciousness and understands how bread is properly served, I will...
Read moreI first visited Bella's last week when I took home a freshly baked sourdough bread (which they sliced for me). WOW. Just WOW. It was SO amazing!! My kids devoured it in 2 days flat and even ate the end pieces (which they never do!!). So I returned this week for another loaf and took home some additional goodies to try: their Olive Bread Loaf, a crobun, and chocolate croissant, all of which were so delicious and addictive and appreciated by my entire family. I also delighted in dining in (there are a few tables) to enjoy a freshly prepared bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. The sandwich was DREAMY and I learned they use eggs from their own chickens!!!! You could totally tell from how fresh it was. I enjoyed the sandwich with a delicious latte and was super sad when my meal was finished. lol While Bella's is a relatively new 'storefront" which opened during the pandemic, the owner and baker, David, is not new to baking. You may recognize his popular baked goodies from the Muscoot Farmers Market and he also supplies breads and baked goods to other restaurants and markets. The bake shop is also in the process of expanding their menu to include other sandwiches (including chicken parm!!) and also soup in a sourdough bread bowl. I can't wait to try out their new items soon. Please give them a try and support this business. Mount Kisco is very fortunate to have such a treasure join the community. I look forward to watching them...
