Billy's Famous Roast Beef — Restaurant in Wakefield

I usually enjoy getting lunch here. I do love the specials that they have. It was cool when I walked in, but then got warm. On a 90 degree day, the AC wasn't on that string. I ate inside and there is only one fan. I got the fish and chips and in the past, I have received a lot more food. I ordered it with all onion rings. I got a few onion rings and five very small pieces of fish. The onion rings were thick, some smaller than others. It was okay. The customer service is always good, but I could have gone to Liberty Bell in Melrose and for five dollars more, got enough food for two meals. They served it in a to go box which surprised me. Liberty Bell served their food on a plate and is very liberal with their food. The food was served hot. I have gotten roast beef sandwiches which were really big and delicious. Awesome place in the old-fashioned "order at the counter and take a number" diner model. Booths available for eating there, takeout seems more popular. Onion rings awesome, fries below average, roast beef sandwiches overstuffed and yummy, soft serve ice cream, fried seafood, lobster roll in season worth every penny IMO. They also have some broiled/salady options as a sort of healthy afterthought. (If you really want healthy, go to Turner's in Melrose a mile on down Main.) The stars of Billy's show are delicious and fried. Can get pretty busy, esp weekend evenings, when wait can get fairly long, but I've never waited more than 15 minutes. Sometimes rowdy kids/loud locals in the booth section. Did I mention their onion rings?...

I am 39 years old and have been eating Billy's since I was about 7 or 8 years old. I grew up on it. As a seafood fan, I've travelled all over the US to coastal cities and I will tell you that no fried seafood joint compares to Billy's. Light flaky coating (not that terrible overused Panko breading), fresh (actually FRESH!) large portions of scallops, shrimp, haddock, perfectly made tartar sauce. Seafood is a little pricey, but for the quality - it's worth every penny. I can only pray that Billy's continues its tradition for the next generations of serving top notch real New England roast beef and seafood.
