The best thing I had was the yellow rice that came as a side with my entree. We were hungry, and my partner chose the Cuban Island Cafe after a quick search of what was close. Remember in the Indiana Jones movie where the guy rapidly ages and shrivels up, and then the old Grail Knight looks at Indy and says, "he chose poorly"? Yeah, it was like that. Our server was definitely a character. The rest of the visible staff seemed to be fairly young, and not a single person there had any concept of conversational volume, AKA "Inside Voice". Food came fairly quickly, but with missing ingredients. And let's just be real - it wasn't very good. The Ceviche was very heavy on veggies, and was just chopped up shrimp, missing the avocado it was supposed to have, and overall just a disappointment. My partner also had the chicken soup, which she had no real complaints about. I had the churrasco, with black beans, yellow rice, three pieces of sweet fried plantains and some yucca frita. The chimichurri sauce was good, and the yellow rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The rest? Not so much. The steak itself was overcooked, and not exactly a generous portion. Where they WERE generous was the seasoning of the steak. I wish I had been served the amount of steak they seasoned for. There were a bunch of photos of the point in Key West showing people who visited the "90 miles to Cuba" marker. Even a little decorative replica of it right by the register.
When you see the pics on the wall, and the little replica on the counter, listen to what you're being told. 90 miles is probably a lot closer than they got to...
Read moreI don’t think this allows people to make multiple reviews. So almost a year later here is another awesome review:
I left my purse at Cuban Island on a Friday evening, cinco de mayo. At least I figured I did but didn’t notice until Sunday morning. Abbey and Layla held onto my purse and tried to reach out to me through their moms Facebook page via mutual friends. To my surprise they brought my purse to my home Sunday and at the time I was eating my leftovers from the restaurant for a late lunch. I felt mostly at peace knowing that if my purse was left there and an employee there found it, it would most definitely be safe and it was. So thank you again Abbey and Layla for being your kind selves and going above and beyond.
(1st review) My mom was in town visiting and had an ulcer attack, after four days of not going anywhere we came to dinner to the Cuban Cafe. Much of anything in this area is going to be fried or heavy. I knew Cuban cafe had some light fare as to try not and stir more drama in my mom’s stomach. The waitress Natallie was very accommodating, asked the cooking staff about spices and they ended up making her their shrimp special without the Cuban seasoning instead using butter, lemon, and salt to season it for her. She loved it. We’ve always enjoyed the atmosphere and staff at Cuban Café and I’m so very thankful for how they treated my mom that day. Amazing...
Read moreI came to America at age 3 from two parents that were born, raised in Havana Cuba. Growing up all i had was Cuban food not to mention living in Miami, and southern Tampa Florida. Being married to a Army soldier made me travel a lot try different foods and so fourth. The one thing i miss the most is real authentic Cuban food. So when i heard of this place i jumped on the chance to be taken back to those good old days but instead i felt like i got a slap into reality. Looking over the menu it was like what is this nothing rings a bell. The one thing that was familiar was the platanos, the pork dish and the black beans. Once i got served and i started to eat i realized i have never had ground beef cooked with raisins, nor glazed in sugar not even when i eat in miami or visit Cuba. The beans were sweet like if they added sugar to it also, diff not the way cuban beans are cooked! Honestly the only thing that semi tasted authentic was the shredded pork but after a few bites it was over salted. The platanos were burnt they were solid black and tasted like they had been cook way before ripping. There supposed to be sweet, soft like a dessert but a natural sweet, not hard, plain and burnt.
I'll be honest im not sure who came up with the recipes but this is not the authentic Cuban food at all. I would say its more Americanized Cuban food and thats coming from a true...
