So it has been many moons since I have stepped into a Spikes (how long? Club Hell was open, that's how long ago) and wanted to share the joy of this fine establishment with the wife. Of course, we decided on the Warwick location instead because it was near the hotel we are staying at. Having gotten out the last night of Comic-con, this was a quick stop.
To start of, the place was dirty and no patrons were in the restaurant when we ordered. Bits of bacon from the previous patrons on the table were noted, all the tables were pretty much in the same condition. The bathroom floor was slippery like it was greased, having worked in a kitchen I knew it meant the mop water had a high concentration of soap/degreaser when it was last cleaned. The barrel was overflowing with used paper towels.
Now the food on the other hand, phenomenal like I remember! Just juicy, tasty junkyard food that was a perfect nightcap after hitting the bars and grabbing a quick bite. It's even good sober!
The Junkyard Dog was great, I was transported to an earlier time, a somewhat better time when Bush was in office and I was directionless in life and having fun. With no responsibilities other than crushing college debt with no way to pay it back. We didn't have smartphones, we were in a terrible episode of Star Trek with our flip phones in that time. Of course I came back to the reality that Trump was elected.
sigh
The bacon ranch fries (curley fries mind you, curley damn it!) were delicious. My wife enjoyed her BBQ bacon cheeseburger and mozzarella sticks.
I liked this location with all the stuff on the walls, fitting with the junkyard theme. The crew were nice and pleasant, and food was fast. You guys just need to put a little effort in cleaning up. I don't care about dirty places (to a degree) because I am giving the benefit of the doubt, that's why I'm giving my rating. Oh and the toilet was broken, so that was a whole thing in itself. I didn't report it because I didn't think the workers...
Read moreI felt like having a burger so I stopped into Spikes - famous for dogs, but I noticed they have burgers as well. The first thing I noticed before I even opened the door was the giant suicide hotline poster on the outside of the building. It just struck me as odd. Anyway, I was greeted by friendly person. The place was completely empty. The atmosphere was dark and filled with memorabilia. Not really a place I would want to sit down and eat at. I decided to get a cheeseburger medium rare on the rare side. My food was ready pretty quickly and the price was pretty average - about $8. I thought the burger was a good size but a little flat... but NOT cooked at the temp I asked for! It did NOT taste good. It was flavorless and greasy. I was very disappointed but honestly not surprised. So if you are considering Spikes maybe you should try their famous hot dogs. As for me I will...
Read moreThere need to be more hot dog places around!! Spike's is legendary. I've been coming here since I was a kid. I'm sad to find that the one on Thayer Street is gone. But the ones in Warwick, Cranston and Providence are just as good as I remember. Staff is always friendly. Food is always made fresh to order. Prices are still pretty reasonable. I've never tried their wings or pizza, but friends say they're both fantastic, especially from a hot dog place. My favorites are the chili cheese, and a custom one with bacon, ketchup and onions. I can BARELY finish two of these things, it's crazy to see how many people have eaten six or more and made it into the "Kennel Club". The buns are so big and dense, I have no idea...
