My grandmother went here to buy 2 apple fritters, of which there many, but she was told that only ice cream was for sale, because all baked goods THAT WERE ON DISPLAY weren't for sale until the following day. Now how stupid is that? You have a customer who wants to buy your goods right there on the spot, and you refuse to sell to them, because you'd rather sell them as at least day old doughnuts. So it seems it's safe to assume that you never get fresh doughnuts here. This review would have been 1 star, but their fritters are good, but beware that they're seemingly likely old pastries. Disgusting.
Edit to response 1: The Donut Shop's staff do work hard, but their staff was clearly directed to refuse to sell to customers when their sign and hours posted show themselves to be open. If these goods aren't for sale to customers, then they shouldn't be displayed where goods that typically for sale are typically for sale. The actual working staff are great, but the top level management is giving poor and heartless business direction by telling staff to refuse to serve a hungry little old lady that just wanted a couple apple fritters for her and her friend. Also, even though the doughnuts are made fresh everyday, The Donut Shop has just admitted they're not served fresh, which is what...
Read moreI'm out on my Columbus food tour, and if it's early enough of the day, I always stop at The Donut Shop in Russell's Point. It overlooks part of Indian Lake. In the summer, there are boats everywhere and people lining up for these donuts.
Today I bought what I think might be the best apple fritter I've ever had, along with a super soft blueberry cake donut. It's a little later in the morning and they try to only bake what they think they're going to sell that day, so the case was a little empty, but there were still plenty of choices. Both of the donuts were very true to their style, meaning the fritter had plenty of nice chunks of Apple and solid texture. The blueberry donut was soft enough to crumble as soon as you take a bite.
At this time of year, you use the side door, which is wheelchair accessible, but in the busy season, they have two walk-up windows and all the donuts are displayed nicely on either side of them.
These guys do have milkshakes, muffins, and hand dipped ice cream, which I'm sure are all great, but a freshly made donut is always going to win when I'm standing here.
This is a little bit of a haul from Fort Wayne, but it's a great stopping point about halfway to Columbus.
What's your favorite donut style?

Read moreWe got up excited to greet the Sunday with donuts from this shop and stood in line at 6:32. We were 4th in line and were there a total of 15 minutes [I state that to help others gauge their wait time].
This is an order at the window shop; I looked inside at two windows full of donuts and noticed inside there were many rolling racks full of them!
The donuts are very pretty to see. I remarked that the next time we visit, I want to try a cinnamon roll.
We took our selection back to camp to enjoy outdoors with our morning coffee.
I ordered my go-to pastries: a single glazed donut and a sugared cinnamon twist. My husband ordered the Long John and Apple Turnover [he allowed me to sample his]. We were both confused about the flavor of the Long John — was it caramel or maple? It was hard to distinguish as my palette only registered the taste of powered sugar from the filling.
Our selections were okay…nice to have with coffee, but not ‘gotta get there first thing’ level. Will I return for that cinnamon roll? Maybe next...
