Last Sunday my wife and I decided to pay a visit to this bakery of whom we had heard many positive comments. We ordered two muffins and two cups of coffee. The muffins were priced $3 and the coffee $2 each. The cashier said that would make exactly $12. She could not give me a receipt despite having swiped my debit card. Later it dawned on me that the arithmetic was wrong. It should have added up to $10 (2 muffins @ 43 each plus two coffees @ $2 each= $10) She then refunded me $1..65 instead of $2.1270 ($2.13). When she could not do this simple calculation I returned her the incorrect change she had given me. Frustrated for no reason at all we drove to Kent where we had tow nice sandwiches at the friendly little place facing the gasoline station. I did not want to file a consumer complaint since it would be unbecoming for such a trivial amount. Also maybe this was just a cashiers lack of arithmetic knowledge that was causing the issue. Sure enough when I checked my bank statement $12 had bee posted (debited) to my account. As obvious $12 had to be tax inclusive. So when $12 is divided by the sales tax rate of 1.0635 the quotient is $11.28. The issue is that non of their products contained any decimals. In other words, it was evident that sales tax had not been collected. Such a nice little bakery in a warm and cozy environment should be most careful when servicing their clients. I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that the more experienced appearing cashier who served us was having a bad day and did not realize exactly was she was doing. Actually, the issue began when she tried to charge us $4 each for the muffins despite their being priced @ $3 each. She tried to convince me that it was the blueberry muffins that were more expensive than the cranberry ones. whereas there was no such differentiation as she had claimed.
We have naturally decided never to set foot into this nice and cozy looking bakery. As they say, once shame on you, twice...
Read moreThe Smithy Café is one of these rare places that combines unbelievable food with a welcoming staff with a cozy and comfortable environment. This is THE place in the area to get your breakfast or lunch and worth a trip if you’re not local.
Whether it’s an artistically made cappuccino, the homemade croissants or muffins or the roasted poblano peppers that make their way into the Sriracha Steak Breakfast Burrito everything here is created on premises and explodes with freshness and flavor. There is something on the menu for everybody, from a chicken gyro to a fig-and-honey melt and landing on anything from a Kaiser Roll to a gluten-free wrap and anything in-between.
It's hard not to instantly relax the moment you walk in as the environment is modern yet rustic, with wooden floors and tables (with fresh flowers), big bright windows and old-school radiators. There’s a collection of early 1900’s photos in the area including one showing children riding in a horse-drawn sled going to school. Or sit outside in the quiet shade of the trees at ne of the many well-maintained picnic tables.
If you haven’t visited The Smithy – well, get moving! And if it’s a bit of a drive well then combine it with a drive around scenic Lake Waramaug and a visit to a local distillery, winery or brewery that are all...
Read moreIts a shame that I spent almost $70 for 4 breakfast WRAPS that were smaller than the length of my hands, which are on the small side. 2 of the wraps were vegan and contained no eggs or meats and still about $16 and change for each. If the portions were larger or the food was incredible I might think it's fair however, that is not the case. They also charge a service fee of sorts and blame the current economy for their increases. An excuse that has lasted 5 years for them. Gas has been steady, eggs have come down along with produce and other things. The real reasoning for their pricing is that they're in a high class neighborhood and know none of the people with money will say anything about the cost. For anyone who lives outside of that neighborhood, I recommend avoid buying anything from there and their market. Nothing there you can't make at home with organic ingredients for a fraction...
