5 Borough Bakery — Restaurant in Waukee

I came here (5 Borough Bakery, as some of the reviews are from the bakery that 5 Borough replaced) after voting and thought I could pick up a treat for a coworker for her birthday, which was yesterday.

They were pretty busy at 9:15 when I arrived. Line was out the the door - I made it inside at around 9:30ish. Was hoping to try the cinnamon roll, but I heard it was a 30-minute wait. Got to the front to order around 9:38. I just asked what three pastries they had that were already done. The cashier was nice and recommended two. Since I had to get to work by 10, I just got two of whatever she recommended (I did say three, but I didn't care at this point). Got my items within 2 minutes.

I ate one of them and it was delicious. Flakey, not too sweet. Shaped kind of like a cup. I didn't really get the names. Think it was the Kouign-Amann though.

When I gave my coworker the other one, which looked like a chocolate croissant, I was so excited and she raved about the first bite so I tried a bit. She ripped it open and to my surprise, it was still raw! I thought they had some kind of cream cheese in there and it definitely looked like it but upon touching it, it was definitely dough.

Quite disappointed 😞 especially when giving it to someone as a present. I felt terrible.

Some of their smaller pastries are better, but I'm not sure I'd try the larger ones again until they get the baking time...

Went for the first time and arrived at 10am. Another customer before us ended up getting everything left. I tried to speak to the attendant twice and ask if what was shown was everything left. She did not acknowledge me even though I was right in front of her asking. The customer before me said yes that’s it and Im sorry I’m being an a** about it but they always sell out. He got 6 boxes full. I don’t think I will make another trip if only the front counter is what fresh pastries they have for sale. We didn’t end up getting to purchase...

I honestly never leave reviews but this place truly deserves it. First off, I have been a matcha lover since before it became the new “trendy” drink and lived in Southern California where the matcha is unreal… let me just say since moving here 2 years ago I have been on the hunt for a matcha that has the RIGHT color and the RIGHT taste. This has both and is truly amazing. Will be coming back and highly recommend to all...
