A Nice Cream - better known as Emack & Bolio's. If you have visited any of their locations (Chatham & Orleans on Cape Cod, or further away in Boston & Albany) you know you'll find delicious, creamy, high quality ice cream. Their menu includes traditional (vanilla bean speck) and new school flavors (like Peach Cobbler) at 2025 prices ($8.18 for 2 scoops, $6 and change for 1 scoop). Bring cash or use the nearby ATM.
Tonight I ordered chocolate peanut butter crunch -- which didn't entirely live up to the name sake. Texturally the crunch swirl was more like a peanut butter-ish cookie dough glob, and vaguely reminiscent of Ben & Jerry's Tonight Dough. I enjoyed it all the same. The richly flavorful chocolate stood out from many other cones I've tried on Cape Cod.
What else is different about this location? A Nice Cream is located at the epicenter of Malaria Mile. Main Street has its charms - and swarms of wild insects.
Thankfully patrons banded together to (respectfully) swat mosquitoes off each other's bare arms and legs. As we stood in the not-as-brief-as-it-looks line we flamingoed from foot to foot, fervently itching our ankles in silence-- didn't want to cause a panic about the Triple E breeding ground.
The electric wonk of a neighboring bug zapper served as an audible reminder: next time consider pants.
I received over 10 mosquito bites during the 5 minute queue, so I have to dock one star. I'll happily revise my review to 5 stars once the property has partnered with a local pest service to remediate this...
Read moreOn our annual "vacation ice cream tour" in the Cape, we always try at least 1 or 2 places we haven't been to before, and A Nice Cream Stop was on this year's list.
The good: staff is very friendly! Cozy outside sitting area and the town is a nice place to walk and enjoy the ice cream.
The bad: Extremely disappointed in the ice cream itself. I bought Cookie Dough and immediately noticed that it was bland. Very, very bland. The dough and chocolate chips were fine, but the ice cream tasted milky, not creamy and definitely not rich. At $7 for a small cone (!) - which was far higher than any other place we'd visited - it was a disappointment overall.
To see if I was crazy, I immediately went down to Mac's on the Pier and tried a sample of the same flavor. The difference was immediate - THAT was excellent ice cream. The burst of flavor from even the small sample said it all. And - Mac's was $2 less, which is much more in line with competitors. (But really, there was no competition.)
In reading other reviews, it appears that comments about bland vanilla-based ice creams are not uncommon, as are comments about how freakin' expensive the stuff is.
Gave an extra star because the staff was nice, but this is really all about the ice cream, right?
No question that we...
Read moreMy friend and I got a scoop of the vegan ice cream in a cup two days and a row, which really impressed me that they offered a vegan option in the first place, and we both thought they were delicious! The vegan flavor changes every day, but one day was coffee fudge, and I was a little disappointed that my cup had basically no fudge pieces. I prefer ice cream to be chock full of stuff. Other day was raspberry with chocolate rice crispy chunks, which was bomb. Would be great to see more permanent vegan flavors in addition to the...
