I sometimes forget as I'm driving through cities that I need to give more weight Google reviews of places that are closer to the urban centers. I was in Raleigh when I pulled up Boulevard Pizza in Wendell because of its elevated review rating. This would be one of those times that I should have stuck to the more metropolitan offerings rather than chasing the allure of that seemingly awesome spot a half an hour from town.

This is most definitely a rural North Carolina town locals type of place. The exterior of the building was so unwelcoming that I wasn't sure if it was actually even open when we arrived. The interior suffers from the same level of inattention: in a state of general disrepair and alarmingly unclean, with examples of deprecated sanitation standards everywhere you look. The food was edible but the spaghetti sauce was the same color as what you get out of a can from the place next door.

You know what they put on the garlic bread? Without even asking you? They brought it out for me to see on request (which was nice)-- "liquid butter substitute." I'm not going to waste time qualifying the following assertion, but that stuff will kill you quicker than smoking cigarettes while mining coal.

They do make a good cheese steak (compliments on the choice of of bread). Just don't make a special trip out from Raleigh City center thinking you're going to find something special out in Wendell... The reviews are inflated by the judgment of people that clearly don't really know what...

So I usually go here 2 or 3 times a week for lunch ( pizza and turkey sandwiches are so yummy) but today was the worst experience I’ve ever had here. Their employee Melissa seems to be on the racist side and has the worst customer service. I was in line waiting for my Togo order and I was next but she let 3 white men go in-front of me. One of the men seen and told her that he would wait and let me go first but Melissa insisted that she take care of them bc they're a priority. I was taking aback by it honestly and when it was my turn I told her how I felt and that she shouldn’t had let the men cut me. Her exact words were “don’t start with me today!” So after that I had it I told her I didn’t want the food anymore and she looked me dead in my eyes and rung my food up, swiped my card and tried to hand me the bag. I had to tell her 3x I didn’t want the food. She couldn’t even provide proof that I was refunded. My family and I are regulars here but after Melissa today I will never come back.
