Came by to taste the local flavor after attending a wedding rehearsal nearby. Bagel sandwiches for lunch sounded like the perfect thing, and Jersey Bagel delivered!
This spot is cozy but no-frills, sort of feels almost like a diner to me. You order at the counter. Seems like they do a lot of to-go orders, but there's enough room inside for several smaller parties to sit and eat.
I was surprised at the size and variety of their menu! Lots of breakfast favorites especially. The deli products were displayed nicely in cold cases so you could get an eyeful before ordering.
The way to get in line is kind of cramped and I felt bad because I kept having to tell people to go ahead of me because I couldn't figure out what I wanted!
Eventually, I settled on a "Spicy Firestarter," which consisted of my choice of bagel with turkey (which I requested be left off), pepperjack cheese, scrambled eggs, jalapeños, and hot sauce. Husband got a ham, egg, and cheese on an onion bagel. You can also build your own breakfast sandwich or omelet with all the fixings you'd like. I also tacked on a bag of kettle chips. I can't remember what we paid, but I don't remember thinking it was too pricy.
We took our sandwiches to go and ate back at the nearby hotel room. Overall, we were pleased -- very pleasantly chewy bagels, nicely cooked eggs, very filling portions. I could've used a little more spiciness as well as some more slight variation in texture for mine -- it was all sort of "chewy" and the jalapeños didn't bring the crunch I was hoping for -- but that's really just a nitpick.
I will say I thought the service was a little brusque. There was a to-go order that sounded a lot like mine and when I walked up to ask if it was mine, I was told somewhat harshly that it wasn't. Which...my bad for sure, but also a nice tone goes a long way when correcting honest mistakes.
Still, all minor things. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area and craving some toasty,...
Read moreCan't compare to New York Bagel, IMO. Not even close.
I really wanted to like this place, especially after reading all of the reviews, but I just don't get it. I've been chowing on bagels for more than 40 years and love them, and my gold standard is New York Bagel.
Believe me ... I tried. I bought a dozen and sampled 4 bagels for breakfast. Meh, not for me.
The dough is really ... well ... dough-ie. Almost like they aren't fully cooked. The texture makes all the difference to me.
Salt bagel (typically one of my top favorites): this is one of those places that uses rock salt. Exaggeration, I know, but I had to scrape it off the bagel.
Egg bagel (typically another of my favorites): it was BITTER! And it did not taste like any other egg bagel I ever had. In fact, didn't have egg flavor at all. How does that happen? Seriously, I took one bite and pitched the rest of it in the yard for the squirrels. It was that bad.
I tried a couple others that weren't as bad, but certainly not excellent, with blueberry at the top with good blueberry flavor.
The bagels are twice the size of those at NYB. Probably a big plus for many people, but not for me. Maybe this is a reason for the inside being so "dough-ie"? I typically want to have two different bagels with coffee, but these are too large for that. Commit to one, or pieces of several, to fill your belly. I don't subtract points for this, but another reason for me to stick with NYB.
The upside ... service was great, and there is a great variety of spreads that include lox, whitefish, great fresh cream cheese varieties, etc.
I'll continue to drive past this place on...
Read moreI work next-door in the medical building and this was my first visit to Jersey bagel. I picked up a few things for myself and people in the office. One of my co workers ordered a bagel with bacon egg and cheese. Once I got to the office and he sat down to eat his sandwich when he unwrapped the foil wrapping the smell was disgusting. I was embarrassed being new to the office because he said you what did you order, I panicked thinking I ordered the wrong sandwich. I replied I thought I ordered bacon egg and cheese on a salt bagel and he said it looks like it but it smells terrible and I agreed. We determined it was the bacon that was the source of the odor he remove the bacon took a bite of the sandwich and throw it out. 15 minutes later we had to empty the garbage because the office was beginning to smell like bad bacon. Our other two purchases of just bagels were fine I would suggest if you eating here skip the breakfast sandwiches and just go with a plain bagel and cream cheese. I don’t think...
