Carnitas La Michoacana — Restaurant in West Chicago Township

Hands down my favorite carnitas in Chicago, and I've tried at least 4 of the well-known ones and about a dozen altogether. Details:

♡The carnitas are as fresh as it gets- they pull what you want right out of the hot cauldron and chop them to your liking right in front of you! Since they're swimming in their wonderful meat juices up until you pick your cuts, you get succulent, juicy pieces of meat that are not only cooked to perfection- but they are so flavorful they'll tantalize your taste buds and dance all over even the most sophisticated of palates

♡Large, hand-made tortillas

♡Salsas are ON POINT. Freshly made and housed in easy to squirt containers. The red is spicier than the green, but not so much that it makes you wonder "WHY?!". Both are superbly flavorful and will easily please most preferences

♡Fresh, crunchy chips that are usually warm and are provided for free

♡Cilantro and onion that are (surprise) fresh, crunchy, and flavorful

♡Their "agua de guayaba" actually has a teeny bit of fruit seeds in it- no powder water here!!!!

♡The coffee here is good and I'm fairly certain there's a hint of cinnamon in it. It's not comparable to "Intelligentsia" or other top-tier cafe level coffee, but it's miles ahead of what most restaurants serve

♡The fact that they run out of carnitas EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. should speak for itself

♡BONUS---The menudo here is the only one that I've ever ordered anywhere more than once. They don't cheap out on the type of meat like most places- here they actually put honeycomb tripe in it!

I read an article yesterday about michoacana cuisine and I'll tell you, I found the perfect place. Here in Pilsen you will find all you're looking for. The carnitas are juicy yet not greasy, flavored beautifully. If you're ordering to take away be prepared for a bit of a line, they're quite in demand. The sides to go with your carnitas are superb. When you arrive you're served warm chips and their two signature salsas. The homemade beans are so scruptious, I can make a meal out if those alone to go with the homemade tortillas. We also ordered some of their chicharron (pork rinds cracklins, so good),avocado slices, cactus salad, grated mexican cheese and of course they serve you salsa(the green one is delicious), and diced cilantro and onion. My first time trying these carnitas since i was in the neighborhood, i decided to try them. Wow. These carnitas where AMAZING!!! FIRST OF ALL, they have them soaking in the delicious carnitas juices but im sure not for long bc they go FAST. They have them at a really good price to go and even have handmade Tortillas. Love them! They were not too thick but def tasty. The carnitas are also sold by tray or half tray which is convenient when you have a big family. The carnitas only come with salsa though, everything else is extra. Which makes sense since its pretty cheap. Will def be coming back. The only downside is the no parking due to being street parking.
