AYCE SUSHI! Yes, it is as good as it sounds. And yes, you will probably leave feeling a lot fuller than you had expected to/wanted to feel, but no, you won't regret it. Because the experience is amazing.

Sushi Damu is located next to the Edward's Theater in West Covina. I feel like this area is pretty quiet, especially on a weeknight, so parking is not an issue as there is a big parking lot. The ambience of the restaurant is really nice. Dim blue lighting with cool decorations on the wall. Lights shining down on the many tables to enhance the sushi. Lots of tables, but it does seem like it can get super packed on weekends.

I came with a party of seven on a weeknight, and there wasn't a wait! Of course we opted for the AYCE price and pretty much ordered to our heart's content.

Memorable items: -Salmon sushi: really thick cuts of salmon that melted in your mouth. -Sashimi salad: a good variety of fish mixed with salad to make it feel like you're getting your vegetables in -Baked mussels: really tasty and had good flavor Agedashi tofu: if you're in the mood for something light, this is a great dish to try. It's a little sour so it will help get you in the mood for more food -Edamame: it's cooked with garlic and special flavoring to give the edamame a rustic flavor -Sunkissed Roll: spicy tuna with salmon on top ... amazing -Baked Jen Jen: spicy crab with salmon and baked - yep, good as well -Snow Roll: I really like cream cheese, so this was my personal favorite! Salmon, cream cheese with izumi dai, all baked with special sauce. I think it came flaming in foil. And since I am the only person who likes cream cheese with my sushi, I think I ate the majority of this roll. -Jen Jen Roll: spicy crab with salmon; really good! -Jessica Albacore: cute name, but a really good sushi. Spicy tuna with avocado wrapped in albacore. -Seaweed salad -Eel

Meh: -You're given the option of sea urchin or toro (one order per person who does AYCE). We opted for toro and while I've had better, this was not bad for an AYCE place. It was pretty thick and was soft, but not as "melt in your mouth" delicious as I have had before. -Tempura: batter is not good, so the tempura is not crispy.

Wow, as I'm writing this, I am reflecting on how much we ended up eating. And I'm pretty sure there are more things we tried that I did not list. I feel like their fish to rice ration isn't too bad. I've been to restaurants with better ratios, but Sushi Damu doesn't pack on too much rice for each fish piece. Overall, food is really good, and the prices are not too high for an AYCE place, either. Mon-Fri Lunch (11:30-3) is $20.95; Mon-Fri Dinner (3-Close) is $24.95; Sat, Sun and holidays are always $24.95 the whole day, and kids get half price on AYCE meals. Ive ordered from sushi damu multiple times a week usually and I order from there because the price is good when getting the buy one get one 50% deal. The quality is hit and miss but when its good its really good. Unfortunately the last several times were not. The last order a few days ago was served with incredibly hard rice as if it wasn't cooked or cooked too long. Two times before that there were issues with bones in the albacore. But I do appreciate the food when it is good. I spend about 45 to 50 a week there which is about 2 times a week on average, sometimes less. I know I won't make or break them with my patronage but its still a lot for me and I am a creature of habbit however, the last time I was there the food was not great but like i said, it can be hit or miss. I called on march 20 at 802 pm and they said unfortunately their last call was at 8pm. While I was disappointed they couldn't make an exception I understood and was told call back by 8pm tomorrow which is now today. I called at 726pm today and was told i could not place an order because they already had last call. I explained this was now two days in a row and I explained that I was told 8pm was last call. They said they had too many customers and that they couldn't make an exception. Thats two days in a row that i attempted to order for myself and a family member that hadn't previously been there and i wanted to treat them to dinner at a place ive been recommending for a while. They said once again that they had too many customers. I am not delusional and i know my patronage will not make or break the restaurant. I know that my recommendation will not make or break the restaurant. I don't have a huge social media following and i know that they will be fine with me not being a customer of theirs. I just want to make my voice heard and let them know that I am disappointed that I could not share this experience with my family member and I am disappointed that they have no allegiance to any customer no matter how often they dine at their restaurant. Always understaffed but for the most part the food makes up for it, but today was such a horrible experience that we may never come back. As a regular we know that the California roll here is not prepared with cucumber so we always make it a habit to request it be added. Well today our server rudely corrected us by telling my wife that she does not need to request the cucumber as it’s an ingredient that comes in the California roll so we went along with him. We assumed we had been requesting it all this time for no reason. Well when the food arrived as we expected the roll had no cucumber inside. We informed the server which we handed him the plate with the California roll and he looked at it replying there is cucumber inside and wanted to put the plate back on the table. I had to remind him that indeed the roll did not have the cucumber and that we told him multiple times when placing the order we wanted to include cucumber to the roll. The server then walks away and talks with the Itamae (cook). The Itamae must have informed the server that if not requested the roll is only prepared with the crab meat and avocado only. The server then comes back places the original roll back on the table and says another roll will be brought out shortly which it never did. Our waiter never came back to check up on us or to see if the order was ever corrected. A second waiter eventually came back several minutes later when we were already waiting to pay since my wife no longer wanted to eat because she was very upset.
