The owners of this restaurant are the most unprofessional people I have come across.
I asked for a simple dietary substitution in a dish, and the owner let me know it couldn't be done. That's fine, I could choose a different dish. The problem is, the owner kept poking at my menu and telling me what I should order instead. Then when I finally got her to leave me alone, I chose a different dish. The braised tofu and vegetables was actually quite good.
But then she came back and showed me the ticket with the original dish still on there, and asked why it was still sent to the kitchen. I don't know??? I don't work there??? How about you don't ask your customers things you should be asking your waitstaff. She kept badgering me and explaining that the chefs shouldn't have received the ticket with the original dish. I couldn't get her to leave me alone so that I could eat my food. By the end of her constant badgering, I had no appetite. I ate two bites of my food before I just didn't feel like eating anymore.
The waitstaff is incredibly friendly and helpful and they were so apologetic. But the owners came back after the waitstaff apologized and tried to blame everything on the waitstaff not knowing the substitution could not be done. They would not leave us alone. The male owner was incredibly rude and dismissive of my concerns.
The owners just could not understand that they are the problem. They can't harass customers and then blame the waitstaff.
In the end, we paid for the entire meal that the owners ruined for us. I would not recommend this place to ANYONE and I will never be...
Read moreI was one in a party of five. We ended up being seated back in one of the private party rooms. We started with 2 orders of crab rangoons. the first order was cold, very little inside the rangoon and kind of doughy. when the second order came they were hotter but still mediocre in taste. We also ordered some steamed dumplings that never did come. the waiter also never brought us plates for our appetizers or our dinner until we had to ask for them. I ordered crispy spicey chicken which was recommended by the waiter. this dish was awful. it was extremely dry, no sauce, the pieces of chicken were just that...tiny pieces. there were also a ton of red chili peppers in it which made it even more overpowering considering how dry the chicken was. I also ordered Shrimp with vegetables which was very tasteless. a very plain dish. I did have a cup of wonton soup that was quite tasty though hotness level of 3 out of 5. it was a bit spicy but good. we spent over 2 hours in that place with 2 other friends and their baby which felt like an eternity. our waiter was a nice kid who at times looked like a chicken with its head cut off running around trying to put out fires. the bartender was an older woman who was not overly welcoming and appeared to be somewhat overwhelmed at times too. Overall, the place was fair ar best and appeared to be as organized as a god damn Chinese fire drill. As for heavenly I don't think God was on our side that night but it sure seemed more like hell. Adios and I highly doubt we will make another...
Read moreIn town for the caucuses and ventured out to explore the close-in suburbs when my family stumbled upon this magical little Main Street in Valley Junction, West Des Moines.
It was later in the evening so the street was quiet but this place was lit up and open for business. When my partner looked it up he saw they specialized in Szechuan Chinese and we knew we’d found heaven!! Food from this region of China is the best— in the world! Spicy, if you’d like it to be, but otherwise just full of flavor.
The night we were in it was Super Bowl Sunday and (rightfully) guessing we’d want to watch the game during dinner, the owner came out to personally offer us a comfy spot in a private space just on the other side of the main room. In no time we found ourselves with a beautiful spread of food and an unforgettable half time show. Again, heaven!!
Food was 10 out of 10! The dan dan noodles made all of our troubles disappear. Please don’t skip that dish.
Then we had the Szechuan dumplings = best we’ve ever had, and a specially beef hot pot that was flavorful and just spicy enough.
The Scechuan chicken is like popcorn chicken, but just lightly breaded. Salty and addictive! The sweet and sour chicken is above standard, served mild for those who can’t handle the heat. Oh, and the wonton soup is also a must!
Can’t wait to visit Des Moines again and make our way back to this Heavenly spot, where the food — the service — the ambiance are a gift...
