Winchester Public House — Restaurant in West Des Moines

This once was my absolute favorite place. I would take everyone that came to town to visit me here. Last night, a group of 5 people went in. All ordered drinks. I felt very uncomfortable with a gentleman sitting at the bar. He kept turning his chair totally around and was staring at our group. So we made a plan to finish drinks, then leave. The gentleman left. And a different bartender came to take our order and then we asked if he would take a photo of our group. I asked him about the gentleman—and he immediately got defensive saying this guy is so cool and always there. During the picture—All Star by Smashmouth came on, and we all started singing. All 5 of us. The bartender quickly came over to my sister (the only one drinking a beer) and took it out of her hand. Saying he didn’t feel comfortable serving her and she had been slurring her words all night. She had 1 beer before we got to Winchester. We thought he was joking but proceeded to dump the beer out. Without and explanation essentially.

So freaking disappointed this happened. The drinks are amazing. And before last night the service was decent as well. I’m in customer service, and this was a HUGE mistake. None of us will be returning, and I would suggest if you want to have a fun time with your friends to not go...

We were looking forward to checking this place out, and it IS a cool space with a big bar, but service was terrible yesterday. We got there shortly after opening (about 2:30PM) and found a table. Someone brought us waters right away and took our drink orders. She brought us our drinks and then came back one time after that, which was just a short time after delivering our drinks. After that, we never saw her again. Literally. We thought maybe she left, as there was someone new behind the bar. No one ever came by to clear away glasses, ask if we wanted another drink, etc. We ended up going up to the bar for our check, as we could see this was going nowhere. We weren’t the only ones; as many people were going up to the bar as well. Oddly enough, once we requested our check, someone brought it to us immediately. It’s not that the staff they had weren’t working, they were clearly understaffed. If they weren’t doing table service, then just say that. It’s too bad, because the one cocktail we did get...

Went with a group out for my birthday. One of my friends is just under 21, walking in we noticed that it said “no minors” on the door. Assuming that it meant under the age of 18 as is standard for that phrase, we thought he would be ok as he had no intention of trying to order alcohol. After some members of our party had ordered drinks and received them, we were carded and he clearly stated he had no intention of ordering alcohol and was just there with the group. He was very rudely ordered to leave, quoting the server “get out”. Disappointed in the service throughout the night as well. We asked for the check and he did not return with it in a timely manner, after deciding to pay with cash we left.
