Yum! Yum! Yum! Got off I-80 to stop at 7-11 and saw this place across the way, so I had to check it out. What a nice surprise! I'm originally from Hawaii, so anything with "teriyaki" in its name deserves a chance. I ordered a beef teriyaki bowl, chicken teriyaki bowl and a short ribs plate, then waited patiently for my order.
The place itself has a "hole in the wall" atmosphere - I don't mean anything negative by that; what I mean is it's a FIND!! I must say that that the place gave off a good vibe when I walked in - several customers dining in, a few waiting on their orders and even after I ordered, more came in to either dine in or pick up orders. The young lady manning the cashier was polite and efficient as she took orders and delivered orders to tables. And the smell? For me, it smelled like home (Hawaii) - noodles, Asian spices, soy sauce, ginger, etc., all mixed together to whet my appetite for the treats that were to come. Even better, it's location is very convenient, right off of I-80 East near 7-11, a gas station and other restaurants.
After about 10 minutes (not long at all considering they were quite busy), the young lady handed me my order and I eagerly took it back to my car - family and I were making a quick pit spot on our way back over the Pass. Let me tell you, the short ribs were soooo ONO (Hawaiian for "delicious), the rice was perfectly cooked and the salad was divine! My kids loved their respective chicken and teriyaki bowls as well.
I know a lot of Truckee Meadows residents who crave "beef bowls" from another place when they travel to Cali, but let me tell you, Oishii's is far better than that other place's beef bowls. The meats and chicken do not taste like they've been steamed and then doused in some kind of sauce - such a big turn-off for me. Oh no, Oishii's meats and chicken taste like they've been marinaded for hours then grilled to perfection.
Suffice it to say, I loved everything I ordered (yes, the kids actually allowed me a taste of the chicken and beef). This place is definitely a MUST STOP next time we're driving through and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants delicious Asian food - they also serve sushi but I didn't order any so I can't comment on it. ...
Read moreWow! So gross. It's pretty apparent these people have made enough fake google accounts to get to 4.5 stars.
First off this is not a sushi/teriyaki restaurant, it's more of a truck stop with "food". We walked in and started looking at sushi on the menu. The girl seemed surprised we wanted it. We order at the counter, and she asks if we want it for here or to go. I'm not sure why, because everything is in to go containers.
Even though we were literally the only two people in there, she calls out the order for us to go grab it off the counter. The sushi is crammed in a to go container with a lid on it, smooshing it down.
You can see in the picture, that black mush on top is apparantly unagi (bbq eel). That sushi roll was $12.00! We also got some teriyaki chicken noodle. I'm 90% sure this "chicken" is big chunks of pork. The consistency of the noodle and mystery meat seemed like it had been cooked 3 or 4 times. I'm not making this up, as I write this my stomach is starting to cramp.
This restaurant is groooosss. I've never just thrown my food away and went to get food somewhere else before. We went to a different place down the street, and told them where we'd been. Without mentioning anything about what we thought, they made a grimaced face and told us it might make me sick.
0/10 would...
Read moreI don't know who I should be more disappointed in, the restaurant for the poor experience I had, or myself, for actually going here.
First of all, I guess I should have known better, no Japanese restaurant could actually be good all the way out here. But, secondly, Oishii Teriyaki did nothing to change my mind. The food was lame, the decor was lame, the whole experience was pretty lame.
Examples: the water cups that we were given weren't cleaned or something, because when you touched the outside of the cup, it left a sticky, waxy residue on your fingers. GROSS!! On top of that, I ordered the Sesame Chicken, and my chopstick was thicker than the pieces of chicken I was given in my order. Seriously? How long did it take for them to flatten the chicken out to get it that thin? If you don't believe me, I posted a picture on yelp to prove how thin the chicken slices were.
All in all, I was so unimpressed by this place that I'm going to be shocked if it stays in business much longer. The only reason they get one star was because their teriyaki sauce...
