Christopher's Eats is a decent restaurant, but it's far overpriced for what you get. I went with my girlfriend the day after Valentine's day and luckily we made a reservation. They didn't have any open tables when we got there and the people who came in front of us left because they didn't have a reservation and it was a 45 minute wait.
Staff was very friendly and professional, regularly checking up on us and making sure everything was how we liked it. Excellent customer service.
The atmosphere at this restaurant is great - it was somewhat dimly lit, but not dim enough to impair vision. They used warm lighting that, combined with the woodgrain used throughout the decor, gave a welcoming and homey feeling. They also played music, and it was just at the right volume - you could hear it playing, but it didn't drown out the conversation. There's nothing worse than going to a restaurant and not being able to hear yourself think because the music is so loud!
Now, on to the food. This is the most important part and, unfortunately, it kind of fell flat.
I got the sweet tea 1/2 chicken with gouda mac and cheese and truffle fries. The waiter talked up the chicken like it would be the best thing on Earth, but it was only decent. I will say the skin on the chicken was impressively crunchy and the meat was tender and juicy. My biggest complaint is that it was bland. It just didn't taste like anything other than ordinary baked chicken. The sides were by far the best part of the meal: I've had truffle fries before, so I knew I had to try Christopher's. They weren't as good as The Peddler's truffle fries, but they were a close second. The gouda mac and cheese was great too, although it could have used a bit more sauce. After finishing them, I found myself wishing I had gotten more truffle fries and gouda mac and less chicken.
My girlfriend got the meatloaf and the same sides that I got. I tried a bit of her meatloaf and it was bland, very much reminding me of Bob Evans food (not good when you look at the price of the food and how much you get). Also, the meatloaf came with what we believe was a gravy rather than the traditional ketchup, but I can say the gravy was good.
All in all, it's not a terrible place to eat, but I think you can do better in terms of flavor, price, and portions. Essentially, Christopher's Eats is a more hipster version of Bob Evans, and their pricing falls in line with most other hipster restaurants, capitalizing on the clientele's willingness to pay more. I would have liked to see more unique offerings on the menu since they seem to embrace the hipster culture. In my opinion, if a restaurant is going to go with a simple/tried and true menu, they need to justify it by making the food out of this world or bringing their own flair to the dish. Christopher's Eats does...
Read moreWe had never eatin here before and in all honesty very rarely do we eat anywhere outside of our own home cooked meals but we was in Barboursville today and wanted to try somethin out of our comfort zone. I got to lookin online at restaurants in the area and decided that we try this place. First impression of the place... it was very nice outside and once we walked inside, I was very impressed with how clean it was, loved the quietness and the whole vibe of the place in general. The table where we were sat was a little small for two people, drinks, an appetizer and our main dish but we made do.
We got a water and a sweet tea... neither of us got refills or anything on our drinks, pulled pork nachos which were absolutely amazing 👏 ! For our main dish... He got the Christopher Burger and French Fries and seemed to be very happy with it. I ordered the 12oz. Ribeye with collard greens and loaded mashed potatoes. I had ordered my steak well done as I'm very weird about under cooked meat at all, I got my meal.. cut into the steak.. and ate a couple bites of the steak before realizing that it was not well done. Now... at first I thought it was just the lighting as it is dim in there but I held it out to get natural light and it was red. I didn't complain about it because that's not who I am and instead I got the steak to go because he will eat it later so atleast it'll still be eaten. I am just stating my experience so that others can be aware to check theirs before eating it unless they want red meat.
Our waitress Emily was absolutely amazing and kept asking if we needed anything and kept thanking us, just overall very polite and kind.
When we recieved our bill, I was overly shocked. I looked at pricing prior to ordering but for everything we ordered it came to $77.38 if I paid with cash however I did not so our total in the end was $80.48 and I tipped the waitress $10 on top of that. To me that is overly priced and they even had a promotion right now for buy a bottle of their wine, get $2 off an appetizer... I'd hate to see how much the wine is honestly.
End result... we can say that we gave it a try it was very nice, staff was nice, it's very clean and they have really nice presentation on their food but don't believe we will be goin back. Thank you all so much for the...

I'm not sure why they moved from their location in the Barboursville Goodwill plaza, but if I had to guess I'd say they weren't making any money. The change of location isn't going to change the bland tasting food and the frankly outrageous prices.
My girlfriend ordered the salmon with tzatziki sauce with the truffle fries and smoked Mac and cheese. The salmon was chewy and flavorless, as if it had just been microwaved. We don't believe there was any cheese in the Mac and cheese, and it certainly wasn't smoked. Imagine soggy pasta noodles in a rue.
The fries were supposedly fried in truffle oil with garlic and parmesan on top. There wasn't even a hint of garlic or truffle flavor and the parmesan was almost certainly the kind you get out of the green plastic bottles at Kroger. (The brand escapes me at the moment.)
I had the meatloaf with the same sides and my experience was similar. The meatloaf wasn't the worst thing I've ever eaten but it just didn't have flavor, as if it was baked to be as inoffensive as possible and appeal to the largest possible audience.
Also there are no free appetizers a(no bread at this price?! Portions were small compared to other restaurants in the region. Service was standard and we didn't have to wait long for our food as the restaurant was rather empty at 5pm on Thursday night.
Overall, nothing to write home about food-wise and abysmal price for what is essentially a bob evans tier meal.
