What? Complimentary popcorn? I didn't get any complimentary popcorn (so jealous of other reviewers)
JP's seems to be a very traditional Boston pub/bar. I remember this type of establishment on every corner growing up in Boston. Most are gone... probably for a good reason.
The pub is split down the middle, half are booths for table service, half for the bar. The decor is classic Boston Sports Bar; wall to wall Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins. The lighting was very dim, a little uncomfortable until your eyes adjusted.
Very busy. Definitely a local watering hole. 1215 on a Wednesday and the place was packed, especially the bar. Like I said... traditional boston pub.
The staff were friendly (though quite busy). The prices were very cheap. The place seemed clean enough, though who can tell in the dim lighting.
The food was... unimpressive. It wasn't terrible, it was just... normal, I guess. I got the fried chicken (came with four sides!) for $9. It was all fine. The chicken was tender, though a little greasy. The sides were all canned or from frozen. Salad was nice and fresh.
My wife got the chicken sandwich. Again, fine. Rolls were store bought, boring. The chicken was well cooked, though nothing special.
I was going to go for 3 stars, but then when I found out they were CASH ONLY, well, come on, man! Really? Still? It's my own fault, I missed it in the reviews. Luckily, sheepishly, we were able to scrape together enough cash to cover the bill.
Wouldn't go again, better stuff nearby, but certainly if you want to get a ton of food for under $10, JP will do...
Read moreI went to JPs today for lunch. It be been going to JPs for over 30 years never had a bad meal! Today I ordered a chicken sandwich. It came with a side and pickles. The sandwich came , it was a chicken patty! It was on what looked like a hamburger roll. Now if I wanted that kind of sandwich I would have gone down the street to McDonald’s, and the patty would have been thicker! Nothing on it, no Mayo, lettuce or tomato. $9.99??? I thought I was getting a fried chicken breast. Nope… awful..
On the other hand the fried scallop roll was delicious. I’ll go back again but would never order the chicken sandwich again,
The lady next to us drove to Westboro from Sturbridge Ma. She had order the same thing and was so disappointed. She said a chicken patty???? She said she read the reviews and thought they would go for a ride and try it out for lunch. She said never again!
Maybe you should state that it’s s chopped chicken patty in the menu, not a piece of fried...
Read moreIt’s basically similar to a very old not well maintained VFW. Interior is dark and not very clean, very musty smelling, the fact that they only take cash isn’t really a big deal. The fee on the ATM is $1 again not a big deal. The staff is a bit cranky, but I’m sure they are over worked and under paid. Definitely a local crowd at the bar thats pretty loud and sauced, mostly older folks. Someone at the bar kept quoting Robney Dangerfield “Dr. Vinny Boombatts” over and over like a broken record, may have even been the bartender. The food was horrible period, the fried chicken was cooked earlier in the week and was reheated, the German potatoes tasted like what I imagine cement taste like. It’s just not good. The place has run its coarse, you can tell they are just going through the motions and don’t really care. Time to put the PJ’s on JP’s and call...
