Sammy's Restaurant — Restaurant in Westbrook

Enjoyed a dinner out a week or so ago - having never been to Sammy's and hearing mixed reviews. We started with the fried calamari and it was excellent! Very crisp, including fried hot peppers mixed in and marinara dipping sauce and a terrific creamy concoction that were both very good. I had ordered the meatballs but they did not come and belief there was a misunderstanding as the service was excellent and the meatballs were not on my bill at the end.

My Truffle Risotto was prepared beautifully with three juicy jumbo scallops half-submerged in the risotto - cooked perfectly. There were four shrimp, I think, and they seemed to be the 21-25 count size, also dunked in the risotto. These were not bad but were definitely overcooked. While I enjoyed my meal, I would not reorder it as the risotto was just too rich for my tastes but others might disagree. My wife enjoyed her grilled salmon and veggies very much and my son enjoyed is NY Strip which was cooked as ordered. He can be picky about his steaks and often when we order medium rare it is very rare but this was cooked perfectly.

A nice touch, which seems to be disappearing from restaurants, was the salad that came with the entree. Mind you, this was a very small salad but it was just right and not expected. All in, including one drink and a couple of coffees at the end - the bill was about $120 - which we felt was very reasonable as compared with other area restaurants for similar orders. Excellent service, great atmosphere. I wanted to give the food 5 stars but it was a 4.5. I'm being picky but I ordered two burgers to go, medium well. One was perfect and the other was very well done. Onion soup was delicious. Ordered a wrap and asked to substitute something else for the fries. Was told there would be a slight charge and said ok. Ordered side salad substitute. Got the bill and was charged $4 which is the full price for a side. So I guess it wasn't really a substitute, but actually was essentially an extra side cost-wise. Salad was yummy but should have been an even substitute. If you want to charge a buck or two to sub, that's fine, but shouldn't be the full price of a side to substitute. My friend had a salad with grilled chicken and it was good but the chicken was thin, flat slices. My wrap was very good and I love that it was a bit grilled so the wrap had some crispness, but the lettuce was quite warm. I will be back and will order a wrap again but will ask for LIGHT grilling. Really like this restaurant. Our waitress was attentive and friendly... the food was very tasty and well presented. One "small" complaint.. The philly cheese steak I had was made for gnomes. It was delicious but tiny. A restaurant can get away with small plates and servings with gourmet food but anyone who orders a sub like a philly steak and cheese expects a real sub.. Not the tiny thing they served me. The narrow plate plate it came on doesn't hide the small portion size.. I was left feeling completely unsatisfied which is a shame as the Philly tasted great...what little I had of it. . The eggplant rolotini was excellent and good sized portions. We will definitely be back but with expectations of small servings. Would have loved to give this place a 5 stars but theres no excuse for skimping on a cheese steak at the price point its sold for here. As a ps ...the drinks rock... no skimping there on alcohol...
