Very pleasant way to kick off the weekend. I stopped by for lunch on Friday with my top tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality. I'm not THAT familiar with Westfield beyond a few random cameo appearances (one of which was to visit Whitney Houston's grave), but I expect a certain level of bougieness when I'm here. Sushi&Asian IS definitely a little higher class than a lot of the sushi establishments you'll find in a strip mall (in Westfield, even the strip malls are kind of gorgeous), with a darker, urban interior. There was a mesmerizing piece of art on the lefthand wall that depicted a female samurai balancing sushi rolls on a sword that I couldn't take my eyes of. We were seated and attended to promptly - given that we were literally next to the front window, there's an argument it was a little TOO dark in there, especially for lunchtime. Minor quibble, if that. Anyway.
Even for a sushi place, the menu is really extensive here - even if you're not a raw fish enthusiast, there's a lot of different directions to go. We split the Rock Shrimp app, which was a nice surprise. It's not unusual for restaurants to overly fry this dish, but this was perfectly done - crisp but not overwhelmingly so. A nice mango flavor to it, which is one of my favorite seafood accompaniments (and something I often request in sushi rolls). For my entree, I went with a salmon/avocado roll and an edgy special roll, Beauty and the Beast, featuring a myriad of fish - spicy tuna, spicy salmon, "regular" tuna and salmon, along with yellowtail. Very tasty, and I liked that the special roll was significantly larger than the normal/classic roll, which isn't always the case. The fish was very fresh, and the special roll had a nice taste profile - lot of different players on the palate.
My chum prides herself on often getting "real" sushi when we go to places like this and opted for the a bowl of sashimi. If she didn't like it, I certainly would have heard about it during the meal and for a considerable period of time thereafter. The presentation on that was interesting - it's hard to see in the accompanying picture, but there was a boat underneath the fish, which I think are usually reserved for gigantic parties but I like that they have single serving options available here. Nice touch.
It's honestly unusual for me to have a service issue at a sushi restaurant (which makes me think it's tied to culture), and this was no exception. We were a LITTLE on the clock for a quiet work from home Friday so any delays would have been more noticeable than usual but it was well paced from beginning to end. Our waitress was attentive and stopped by regularly. After side-eyeing a scrumptious looking deep fried ice cream dish at a nearby table I wish we'd had a little more time to play with, but alas. The curse of adulting.
Definitely worth another visit though I'd recommend avoiding the downtown Westfield traffic situation if we can. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that that artistic masterpiece on the wall ends up at an upcoming...
Read moreLove the beautiful decor, very modern and chic. For drinks we had a ginger ale and a hot tea, if I would have know it’s was BYOB I would have brought a bottle, maybe next time! We started with the misu soup, mango salad (amazing) and the crazy Friday roll which was great, shrimp tempura and spicy lobster topped with avocado and roe 🤤 , what else are you going to ask for! Then for entree we split the whole fried red snapper, it was very weird, fried like in tempura and the flavor was really strong, did not enjoy the fish but the fried rice was amazing. For dessert we had the chocolate cate with ice cream, wish the cake was hotter and fresher then what it was but that’s okay, we also had the fried ice cream tempura and they were very skimpy with the ice cream. Thank God I order two desserts. Emily was our server and she was great, I believe the manager also came and checked in on us, made us feel...
Read moreAn amazing experience from the walk in the door. Clean, friendly atmosphere, happy diners, great service and awesome fresh food. I will continue to eat there and recommend it highly to my friends. All who have been there agree with my rating as the best Chinese food they ever had. Glad there is a great Chinese restaurant near home. Thank you, East Manor!
Update 11 months later: The great food starts in the kitchen with chefs who come in every day from Chinatown in Manhattan! The Cold Sesame Noodles are amazing! The Jasmine Tea is very tasty. We also had Singapore Mei Fun (as spicy as you like) and Broccoli in Garlic Sauce with Fried Tofu. Finished up with a healthy dessert and sage words. Everyone that works there speaks Chinese. Authentic and delicious food with great service and ample free...
