It's a diner. I mean, boy howdy its a diner. Small town diner.
We were eating here and it was December and there was Christmas music playing. Not, like, in the diner. Just generally like someone was playing it on a loudspeaker. And we're like "where the hell is that music coming from?". Apparently the town plays it over loudspeakers along main street. Like, can you imagine living in town and they've got Christmas music playing all December over loudspeakers? Man, small town PA, man. Man...
Anyway, its a diner. Diner food. It's fine. You get your coffee and your eggs and what not. The place probably has not seen an update inside since the 80s, or something. I mean, it is d. a. t. e. d. inside. And that's fine I like that. It's the kind of place where your waitress is in her 50s, probably has worked there since high school, and smokes a pack of menthols a day. It's the kind of place where all the men wear caps with the name of a feed or tractor company, and all the ladies discuss the menu like its the first time they've contemplated the concept of adding a muffin or fruit with their order for an extra $1. And I like that. Don't change it.
Anyway, the food is fine. I mean its a diner in a small town. What do you want? The Ritz uh... Carlton? Or whatever. Filet mignon? Get...
Read moreThis is one of those classic, metal exterior, modular diners that dotted the country side along US Highway Routes and "Main Streets" throughout the country in the 40s, 50s & 60s. The interior is in much better shape than most, and has clearly been lovingly cared for throughout its existence.
My wife and I searched for this place after hearing about their burgers while touring the Eckley Mining Village. The burgers proved to be well worth the search. (How can anyone resist a burger that's nearly double the size of its bun?) The coleslaw tasted literally just like what my mother used to make. (Was surprised that the menu called it coleslaw; traditional "coal region" eateries always called it "creamed cabbage.") The "bite size" (which really are bite size) potato pancakes brought back memories of block parties, church bazaars, and CYO basketball tournaments.
Next time, I need to save room for dessert.
If this place has a downside, it's that it closes at 3 PM and that it is a little tough to...
Read moreMy wife and I came here on a Sunday for lunch. We live in the area and have never been here before. After reading the reviews, we figured we would give it a try.
Upon arrival, we had a very short wait but were quickly seated. The restaurant appear to be very clean and the staff was very polite.
We were quickly waited on and quickly served. My wife and I both got the burger and my wife had gotten the cheese fries and I had gotten the onion rings.
This is one giant burger. It was well-cooked and was extremely tasty. My wife said the fries were excellent. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. My onion rings were are excellent as well.
If you are looking for a quick and tasty lunch, you can't go wrong here. In fact, the burgers were so big we ended up taking half home.
We will definitely be back!
