The American Southwest has some great Mexican food, Navajo fry-bread, breweries... But after touring around and having these for a while, you want something different. I guarantee you that this "different" craving is Chang Thai.
While driving on 40 towards the Grand Canyon, we searched for a place for lunch and decided on Chang Thai. We were not disappointed!
We ordered Chang Thai Sampler (an appetizer with gyoza, wontons, egg rolls and crab Rangoons, all fried), Green Curry, Corn dog with chips, Kra Pow Moo Krob (a street-food-style stir fry with crispy pork belly), and Moo ping (street-food-style grilled pork skewers and sticky rice). For drinks, we got Thai iced teas.
Simply put, all were excellent. Actually, our daughter's corn dog was fried a little too dark. So, she ate half of that and abandoned it for tastes of our Thai food dishes which she loved more!
The Thai iced teas were not too sweet, which was great. At other places these are often served cloyingly sweet, not appetizing.
The Green curry was good. Other places make the curry too thick, whereas Chang Thai makes it lighter. It goes terrifically with the included jasmine rice.
I loved my Kra Pow Moo Krob. If you're familiar with Filipino liempo (crispy pork belly), it's like that, but chopped into smaller pieces and stir-fried with basil and veggies. Just awesome. I could eat that all DAY with the included jasmine rice. I highly recommend this dish. Just order it, you'll thank me.
The Moo ping looked great. It's a shame that I didn't get to taste it since my young son wolfed it down before I got a chance. It comes with a tasty cucumber relish and sticky rice served in a tiny traditional woven basket.
When asked of our spiciness levels for each dish, we found "mild" to have just the right kick for us. It allowed the tastes of the dishes to shine through while still having enough spice and tingle on the tastebuds.
The restaurant itself if clean with lots of spacious seating, traditional decor mixed with cute, funny decor (can you find the painting elephant?) The restrooms are clean.
Remember: Kra Pow Moo Krob. Get it today. It's #ST6 on the menu. Look for the restaurant with all the big flags and inflatable dancing man out front, can't miss it. DON'T miss it.
And don't forget to say hi to MariVic, she's just as awesome...
Read moreThis place was an ordeal. We got into Winslow hungry after hiking the day at the Grand Canyon. We just got water to drink, as we all needed to replenish after hiking. The water tasted off, an odd bit of chemical or cleanser taste. We ordered our food, then killed some time laughing how we each got different levels of spiciness -- 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4. No one felt up to 5. Then we killed some more time talking about our time in Thailand. Then we got a bit concerned killing time, as an hour had passed. Finally, 15 minutes later (for a total of 75 minutes) half our food came. Waiting 10 more minutes, we weren't sure any more was coming. We flagged down a server, and found that indeed it was simply not, as we had been forgotten. We spent another 10 minutes trying to get issues resolved and flagging down more people, all who seemed confused or otherwise helpless to provide any solution. Finally the owner/manager came to our table, apologized, offered us free dessert (that no one wanted), and we told her we just wanted the food to go. She did finally get the last two orders cooked and out in 5-10 minutes. Then it was a bit more discussion to get the food already on the table boxed up to go. With everything finally boxed up, we paid and left. Turns out overpaid, as the shrimp added to one of the forgotten orders never did get added. Overall, our party said the curry was good, the scallops were good, and the noodle dishes were just ok. My daughter was excited to try the mango sticky rice, and was sadly disappointed by the end of this whole scenario, as she never did get the chance. (This was unfortunately not the free dessert offered, and by the time we finally had everything boxed up, we didn't trust any...

A gem in the middle of nowhere. Simply the best Thai food of my life.
I love Tom Kha soup. I thought had great Tom Kha soup at other places. After I had it here at Chang Thai, I realized all those others were just watered down versions of what it should feel and taste like.
Vicki who served us didn't mind all the idiosyncratic requests that I had and served us with a smile through all that.
Mas, the owner, personally came to our table to check how we liked the food. She also shared the story of how the restaurant came about in the middle of what I consider nowhere.
I also learned that they use fresh ingredients and hand make all the food. While many places say that, I saw Vicki roll the fried banana freshly just when were ready to get it. We also got the panag curry and i learned from the person in my party that ate it, that it was the best they had as well. And this from a person who had first hand experience with home cooked authentic Thai food.
I am glad that Google showed this restaurant in the list when I asked for restaurants along the route of my more than 1000 mile drive.
I told Mas that I wish them luck that they will grow enough to start a restaurant in a city because their current location is too far for me to drive to.
Oh...look at that.. I didn't intend to write such a long review. Hopefully that tells you the effect the food had on me.
In short, if you can make it to their...
