The Hostess tall lady looked us over seemed annoyed said my wife. I was busy looking over the establishment. Both of us are in the business FOOD Industry two tables of folks there about 6 p.m. We were seated at window next to waitress station. We ordered bowl of Chowder, Mac and Cheese, Coconut Shrimp for appetizers they were a cold prelude to come. We orderd the Prime rib Medium Rare sat talked about the signature Mac and Cheese that was burnt on top a little to much really but cold like the Chowder and Coconut Shrimp at this time they seated folks behind us and while waiting for our Entrees we hear our WAITRESS tell them about the specials Prime Rib, Sword Fish, Turkey Dinner, all the extras We looked at each other I SAID SHE NEVER TOLD US THAT OR THE PRICES LIKE THE REGULARS. WELL THE PRIME RIB WAS SO COLD THE AUJUS AFTER A VERY SHORT TIME HAD FAT COAGULATION IN BOTH PLATES BOTH BAKED POTATOES WERE BURNT THEY PUT THE SOUR CREAM PACKETS ON THE PLATE ON THE FOOD SERVING 38.00 DOLLAR PRIME RIBS A LOUSY PRESENTATION. THE WERE REGULAR CUT BOTH HAD A PESKY AREA YOU COULD NOT CUT WITH A KNIFE WAS A VERY LOW GRADE CUT FOR THE PRICE. Talked with one of the folks who sent us here He was dismayed by our report I said while eating hey honey they have your favorite butter while hostess was talking to a few waitresses and Hostess watched us for a few I think she thought I was going to steal butter packets I had no room I was carrying my company's night deposit we laughed but after shelling out price of meals a 30 percent tip. We were not happy so many friends come here saw about 6 to 8 on the way out said everything was GREAT but it really was all a cold experience it happens been back for drinks twice to meet up with a few friends I CAN'T bring myself to eating there again. My friends say its different when owner or son is there. Really it should not be. And the Prime Rib at Century house blows theres away at a third of the cost But they serve great wines and Drinks. Not what the hype is all about. We eat out very often and this could have alot better experience since they are not bashful charging 5 star prices. I wanted to tell the hostess but wife felt it would be futile to do so she had formed a opinion of of us already according to her. We came right from our jobs I am writing this in there comfortable lobby having a look at portrait of a wonderful hockey player, Will return again next month for dinner again give it another go for a variety different app's and Soup want to try there other Entrees. Talk then sports fans... We Keep Cooking and going out after Restaurants are our...
Read moreOkay, I’m about to have a blast in this review. So I’m a bit late in writing this, but better late than never I guess.
In August of 2020 my wife and I were on our honeymoon staying at The Inn at Crystal Cove (now closed 🙁). We had intended on eating at a couple of different restaurants, but seeing that we were mid-pandemic, a large majority of them were closed. But you know what wasn’t? That’s right, you guessed it, the Winthrop Arms Hotel & Restaurant. So we spontaneously showed up and were greeted by a very upbeat gentlemen I am assuming was either the owner or GM. Let’s call him Mr. Owner. We were seated and looked through the menu for a bit, the nice waiter came by and took our order, I ordered the Lamb Chops and my wife ordered the Mixed Green Salad. So here’s where it gets fun… while awaiting our order Mr. Owner proceeded to walk by ALL of the tables and offer them a bite of the Lamb Shank that he was proudly parading around the restaurant. I didn’t end up taking a bite, regretfully so, as I write this. Mr. Owner then sat down at a table across the restaurant with a family, and ate whatever was left of the community Lamb Shank on his plate. We then received our order. I was 3-4 bites into my delicious Lamb Chops when Mr. Owner proceeds to point at me from across the restaurant and yell (in all caps) “HOW DO YOU LIKE THOSE LAMB CHOPS?” I gave him a thumbs up and smile because they were indeed fantastic, as was my wife’s salad. All while we were eating, Mr. Owner went around and greeted every — single — table — in the restaurant, like they were family. That’s not even the best part. That came when Mr. Owner gave us a complimentary dessert, for literally no reason because we definitely did not tell him we were on our honeymoon. And the dessert was outstanding, it’s not on the menu but I think it was an apple dumpling of some sort. So, suffice it to say, we got a delicious dinner, dessert, and a show (from Mr. Owner).
My wife and I still talk about this place and how when we come back to visit Boston, we WILL be back. And maybe I will try that Lamb Shank this...
Read moreUnprofessional, Unaccountable Ownership & Poor Customer Service – Avoid This Business||I tend to avoid leaving negative business reviews, but an experience this poor makes it difficult not too. ||After staying one night here and parking a vehicle during a trip, we returned to a nightmare—keys were nowhere to be found, no one was there who could assist, there was no record-keeping to refer to, and the employee present didn’t have the phone numbers for the owner or any other employee that might help. We were stuck for almost 2hrs hours (having to find emergency pickup for young kids at home in Maine), and told “likely no one else would be around until 4pm, and we could come back”. This was 8AM so we’re talking 8 HOURS. ||From inside the hotel-restaurant, we did everything—sent emails, contacted booking platforms, Instagram, LinkedIn and finally the WINTHROP TOWN OFFICE to get ahold of a phone number for owner Casey Goll, who inherited the business. It turned out he was onsite, ASLEEP UPSTAIRS all along, and the employee working was too afraid or not trained to mention that or go get Casey, despite the urgency of the situation after 2hrs.||Once we got his number, Casey took his time coming downstairs and was unapologetic and blasé (“Well, what? You have the keys now don’t you? What else do you want?”). That upset my partner enough to raise her voice—owner’s response was “Woah, you might want to check your tone right now.”||I wrote requesting a refund for the night’s stay, offering ownership an opportunity to make this situation right, rather than publicly sharing what we experienced. Response? The owner accused us of “making a threat”, noting that we weren’t charged for parking (which was either $5/night as I was quoted on the phone before booking, or $15/night as I was told upon arrival, or $10/night that I was told at checkout. Who knows?). No apologies, no accountability. Screenshots attached. The small-mindedness and immaturity of ownership at Winthrop Arms pervades the business as a lack of basic business etiquette or systems...
