Bill & Sam's Diner in Wolcott celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020 serving breakfast all day and lunch to many local area customers who frequent this long-standing modest establishment. A painted mural on a main wall shows the Wolcott green with its town hall, monument and bridge running over the Mad River. It also displays the town seal in the center, as do the booths table surfaces where the edges have a good twenty devoted local businesses decals who as sponsors keep their advertisements there for two years.
Sitting at the counter for a quick breakfast sandwich, my partner really enjoyed his sausage and cheese sandwich on a fresh roll with coffee before a recent nearby appointment.
We grabbed lunch here the other day and I can see why everyone likes to come here. My partner had the Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich which came on a grilled roll with a moist crispy piece of fried chicken, melted cheese and plenty of warmed ham. Really succulent. I had the 1/4 lb. cheeseburger medium rare with lettuce and tomato. Juicy, pink and hot off the grill. Both came with fries and coleslaw.
Eggs here come with home fries, toast and coffee or tea until 11:30AM. The diner closes at 2PM except for Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays when they close an hour later at 3PM. Take Out is available and with warm weather here, there are some outdoor seating with tables and umbrellas set up out front....
Read moreBill and Sam's holds a special spot in my heart and stomach. I have been going there for breakfast since High School, and that was so long ago. The building was only about half it's current footprint then. There was one section of counter and maybe 3 booths. Sam was the cook and Billy made sure you didn't dawdle over your coffee and he took your money. In his defense they had to move things along to accommodate all the working guys trying to get the breakfast special (2 eggs, toast, meat, and coffee) for the outrageous sum of a $1.50. When I say it was working guys I meant it. I don't think women started venturing in until the early eighties. Women were always welcome but Bill and Sam's was a bastion of the working guy early on. Shoot ahead some 40 odd years and Bill and Sam's is still there. The place has doubled in size. Sam has retired and sadly passed not too long ago. Billy still holds the fort down. They are now open a couple of evenings and they offer home cooked dinners and all the standard fare. They are still open for breakfast, although I doubt it's a...
Read moreThe only good thing about this place is the food. The french toast, muffins, bacon, eggs, and sausage are all above regular diner quality. The food is also fairly priced and well presented. Everything else about this experience was terrible. Here are just a few reasons :
-customers can see employs smoking no gloves ( saw the cook go from smoking to cooking maybe without washing his hands) open arguments in front of customers between staff as well as openly engaging in private conversations loudly enough for everyone to hear because it is such a small place dirty, moldy furniture and in great need of upkeep falling apart light fixtures are full of dust right above tables and completely ruin the beautiful tiffany glass rude waitress that mad slick comments to me while overly complimenting my partner employees loudly disscussing personal issues such as passed failed business ventures and...
