My grandma wanted to go to Bauman's farm for mother's day last year. On the way through, I couldn't help but notice all of the Mexican restaurants and markets in Woodburn. I knew that I had to visit them.
This year for mother's day, instead of getting lunch at Bauman's farm I searched the nearby Mexican restaurants for a place to eat. They all had similar ratings and comments, they were all good, all authentic, all fairly priced, and it seems the majority in the area are generally Oaxacan inspired.
I was sure that wherever we went i'd have a good experience, I was concerned that my grandma wouldn't find something she'd like, but after searching we found Casa de Caldos (house of caldrons/stews).
As we pulled up and parked, another car pulled in close next to us and they apologized for parking too close (which was not a problem, just pointing out our first interaction which was pleasant and friendly). A Latino family came out from the car and a young boy pulled out some of his toys and immediately presented them to my grandmother and they had a beautiful exchange, he presented them to her one by one.
Upon entering, the place was nearly full and it became immediately clear that we were the only werros here which to me was a good indicator that the food would be good.
My grandma has a very sensitive aversion to spice because she had a severe infection on her tongue when she was younger, for that reason as I mentioned I was worried she wouldn't find something that she liked. But the clerk at the counter was careful in listing the items that were not too spicy, including a pollo pozole dish rich with hominy that happens to be one of my grandma's favorite dishes, which she ordered.
I ordered mole tacos, a mole tamale, and carne asada tacos as well as al pastor tacos to go.
The tortillas we so fresh and delicious, the mole rich and deep with flavor. My grandma loved her pozole and it was enough for her to get 3 meals from. Accompanied with the pozole were 3 deep fried tortillas which went as well as can be with the stew.
The tacos were $3.50 each and had a very good sized portion of meat, around 3 ounces. 2 of them would be sufficient for a lunch for only $7. They came with radishes, cilantro, onions, and red and green salsas.
What I would give to have such an establishment where I live in Northwest Portland. I would likely eat at such a place 4 times out of the week or even every day.
It was the perfect meal and made for a lovely mother's day for my grandma, I can't recommend it enough if you're anywhere...
Read moreFirst time here, and I was excited to have some traditional caldos like my abuelita used to make, and I was not disappointed!
The caldo de res was flavorful, and the beef was super tender. Corn on the cob, carrots, green beans, and it came with what tasted like house made tortillas. I asked for a side of arroz and it was perfect!
We also tried the pozole, which was not the typical red version. It was even better! Heary portions of shredded chicken, todtadas (I had the option of that or tortillas), and all the fixings!
The kid had the carne asada quesadilla, and it was stuffed with tasty steak and gooey cheese!
Last but not least, we got to try the tamales, courtesy of the guy running the front since it was our first time in! One chicken mole and one rajas con queso. I can't decide which one was my favorite!
I'm definitely coming here again! I saw a sign for Albindigas on Wednesday, and I'm making that...
Read moreI have to start this review with one word "Fresh!" They chefs in the back, which you can see from the cashier as you order make everything fresh and it shows in the flavor. You can see the cook making fresh pressed Tortillas. Boy what a difference it makes when you have fresh Tortillas. The mole with rice was outstanding. The simple steak tacos with onion and cilantro taste so good with the fresh hand made Tortillas😃. I had the Birria in a burrito and it was a solid 8.5 on the 10 scale (I'm from LA, I'm a tough judge. I know Mexican food Mi amigo no one gets a 10). The place also has an attached bar area so it looks like evenings will be extremely nice with a Margaritas. You have to try this place. Plenty of free parking, and Fresh food! Hand made Tortillas, etc. You can't go wrong. They also have 3 house made fountain drinks. Try the green one😃 Stop in let me know what you think. I will...
