Update: Below is my review from three years ago. I still stand by my comments about the food quality, hence why we keep returning.
However, we have been really disappointed the last five or six times that we've been into the restaurant this past year. Every time we go in, the once friendly, professional, and personable staff are distracted and uncommunicative. I am not exaggerating by saying that every SINGLE occasion of the 5-6 times we've been in this past year, the woman behind the counter is on her personal phone using Bluetooth ear buds talking to someone. She does not greet anyone coming through the door, and she speaks to the person on the phone without stepping away from the counter or even putting her hand to her ear, so you don't know if she's talking to you, or the person on the phone. Having been through this awkward situation 6 times now, I can tell you that for all of the times we have awkwardly answered a question, she was NEVER speaking to us. We felt like a complete inconvenience to her day by coming in and ordering food. Being in the service industry myself, I would never want one of my customers to feel this way, which is why I'm hoping that this review will inspire some change.
There was one other concern that was worrisome during our last visit. The same woman took an order for the people who walked in behind us, they ordered 2lbs of ocean perch and a multitude of sides, probably a $60.00+ order, she went into the glass cooler case, pulled out a sheet of fish, hollered a question about it back to her coworker, he answered with "I don't know..." and she proceeded to put a glove on, and portion out the fish to weigh it in a paper boat on top of the case. She then walked down and, with the same glove on that she had used to portion the fish, proceeded to dig into the tub of French fries to portion those out as well. I KNOW in the hustle of things, it's easy to forget, but cross contamination is a real concern when you are dealing with fish and should be a high priority, I believe.
My partner is telling me I shouldn't update this review because he is worried about making employees mad for the next time we visit, however, if it was our business, I would want someone to give us constructive feedback that could help us improve so I'm hoping that this is received well. Not looking to get anyone into trouble, just food for thought. Customer service should always come first and that is what I used to love about your establishment in addition to the amazing food, but that seems to have disappeared this past year or so...
We will continue to visit because the food is wonderful, but I am really hoping to see some change going forward. Fingers crossed! (And hopefully the staff doesn't hate me for dropping a star. Lol) Review from 2019:
Food is made fresh and portions are great for the price. Staff was friendly and professional. We will...
Read moreI’m so angry that I don’t know where to begin. Let me start off by saying this place used to be excellent about 25 years ago. The fish was good and the service was consistent. Unfortunately, whoever has taken over ownership hired someone that cannot cook. We just placed an order for takeout about an hour before closing and the food was so horrible we couldn’t even eat it. The fish was not fried well enough. The catfish is old and smelled bad. That should never happen! Even the green tomatoes tasted bad. I have a question for the owner, why don’t you care about what is going on with your business? I told my husband not to come back here. Well, he talked me into giving it another try and they truly did not surprise me at all.. The last time I ordered here was literally about 10 (ten) years ago and the fish I was served was so black it looked like charcoal briquettes. I know that seems inconceivable but it’s true. I don’t recommend this place at all because they don’t seem to care about the food or what they serve and if you will come...
Read moreFat Man's Fish Fry has new ownership and the food and service has definitely suffered because of it. I ordered a pound of cod and when I inspected my food after pre-paying. I was very disappointed my fish was over cooked, and hard as a rock. The pieces were small and very hard, also it didn't appear to be a pound with only 5-6 pieces in total. Before pulling off I went back into the store and complained that my fish was very hard and small, and it didn't appear to be a pound. The only thing the male cashier said was "that's the way we cook it ma'am" and "yes it's a pound". He didn't offer to remake it to my satisfaction nor refund my money. I've been going to Fat Man for years, but I will never step foot back into that store again. The prices have increased as well. My supposed hard pound of fish was over $23 dollars. I threw my fish away as it was too hard to bite. DO NOT waste your time or money at Fat Man's Fish Fry they're nothing like the original owner. Also the store's entire is old and in...
