After learning the hotel had a restaurant attached, I decided to give it a shot, especially hearing it was mexican-puerto Rican fusion. While the outside appearance didn't really draw me in, it certainly wasn't bad. As I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised....two ladies enjoying a drink and chatting at a table and three gentleman sitting at the bar enjoying their food and adult beverages. I was on a mission...after reading a review on the Mexican rice with shrimp and pico de gallo, covered in queso cheese, I knew that would be my order! While waiting on order I requested a bourbon and coke which was promptly made and delivered. The only issue here was the 1.25 oz of Bourbon was poured in a regular size glass like you would sip sweet tea out of and then filled with coke, basically removing any hint of Bourbon. I would suggest utilizing actual drink glasses instead of the larger ones. That was where any negative statements end. The place was spotlessly clean, very friendly staff, plenty of large screen tvs for viewing sports and the food was absolutely delicious!! Shrimp cooked perfect, queso right on point and the combo of shrimp, rice, pico and queso worked out to an outstanding dish! I would strongly recommend this establishment to anyone and I will definitely return on my next trip...
Read moreI hope that the owner of Mami's Cafe will forgive me for taking so long to review her establishment after we visited there on 20 AUG 2024 but here goes. My wife and I were on our way to Charleston, WV to attend the WV Harley Owners Group Regional Rally and after visiting a friend at Black Bear Harley-Davidson, we decided to find a place to stay for the night. We found a Tru hotel and after checking in, we searched the area for restaurants. After looking my wife and I decided on Mami's Cafe for dinner and we both were pleasantly surprised. While I don't remember exactly what we both had, I do remember that it was delicious. We met the owner and discovered that her and my wife were both, born and raised, Puerto Ricans. That led to more discussion about where each came from and what brought both to the mainland US. It was a very enjoyable evening, the food was great and the conversation with the owner pleasant. So, if you are ever in the Wytheville, VA area and are looking for something more than the usual highway exit food, stop in and give Mami's Cafe a try. I think you...
Read moreWe had high hopes, but were disappointed. The first time we tried to go here, even though it was well after the claimed opening time, it was closed. There was a woman cleaning, but it took a lot to get her attention, and then she opened the door just to tell us they were opening late. Maybe update the sign, the Google listing? We tried again today, even later, and they were actually open. The empanadas were OK, but nowhere near as good as what we've had at other places. The fried pork was very tasty, but also quite tough. The fried plantains were bland. Plantains are the mainstay of their menu, but they were out of a plantain dish my wife ordered, so she went with another empanada, which was just OK. If you're looking for a great place in the Wytheville area,...
