I was passing thru and stopped for a coffee. I almost missed this little gem because it was tucked in the back lot. From the moment I walked in, I knew this place was special. It was very cozy, with a mix of leather furniture, comfy chairs and tables and a long wooden table with benches. It immediately invited me in, where I noticed several people camped out with laptops, coffee and baked goods.
The staff apologized for the delay, as they'd just gotten a large order for breakfast sandwiches. But they got me my iced coffee which I prepared while I waited for my breakfast sandwich. I asked at the register for dairy free options, which they have oat and almond milk. I ordered an egg and bacon sandwhich on their "mystery" bagel which they said was a Chicago something or other seasoning. (I later found out it tasted like Chicago steak seasoning and was sooo scrumptious!) There was a couple in the back doing the cooking and a couple of younger kids in the front of the house taking the orders, preparing bagels and getting baked goods. They worked fast and efficiently, and were very pleasant.
When my sandwich was ready, the lady who prepared it hand walked it over to me, but she said it was a bacon, egg & cheese. I politely mentioned I didn't order the cheese. She felt awful that they'd prepared it wrong, and apologized profusely for the extra wait, even throwing in some extra bacon. And we're not talking about regular thin strips. This was thick cut, cured perfectly and cooked to perfection. The bagel was not the usual dense, doughy, chewy kind. It was airy, and buttery, with nooks and cranies, perfectly toasted. I also got a raspberry scone with a lemon drizzle, to enjoy later in my road trip. (It was so tasty, I wish I'd gotten the blueberry as well!)
I would definitely return, next time I am in that area, and can't recommend it enough to anyone looking for delicious coffee and food with a welcoming atmosphere, and staff who go above and beyond to assure their guests have a happy &...
Read moreWas in the area and decided to check it out... wanted to try the coffee and advertised sweets.
Regrettably, I was extremely disappointed, and here's why...
We ordered 2 mocha lattes, 1 with almond milk. The coffee had an odd taste, and not from the almond milk that I prefer, and always use. Both beverages were 2/3 full, almost no foam, grrrrr! The coffee was weak, too!
The banana muffin was tasty and from the bakery next door on the same property, but it was very small. Any place else (except Starbucks) they make them jumbo/Texas size. My companion had the last cream scone, tasty but very dry... or was it stale?
[I think the owner should take an example from SCARBOROUGH GROUNDS, better coffee drinks, and substantial sized muffins, etc.]
The senior woman behind the counter DID NOT USE GLOVES OR WAX SERVICE PAPER! She used her bare hands to get the baked goods and did not wash them after handing cash or touching things behind the counter... talk about lackluster sanitation and hygiene practices!! It sorta-kinda turned me off!
The batista, young, polite, and obviously inexperienced, didn't know how to load the coffee into espresso machine properly. She was using her fingers to finish packing the coffee grounds instead of the plug to compact it. Again, where were her gloves?
Although there wasn't much left for pastries, they brought 2 more trays of muffins in that looked nice but very small. Alas, they were out of everything else. That was sparse for a Saturday morning at 10:45..., how come??
I don't think I'll return here, more negatives than positive observations. Sad but true!!
Next time I'm in the area, I will go to the European Bakery down Rt.1. They have nice baked offerings, decent coffee, and CLEAN HANDS.
AT LEAST THE UNISEX BATHROOM WAS CLEAN AND...
Read moreThis spot has potential, but needs a lot of improvements. I went with some friends and the minute we walked in, we wanted to walk out because the fluorescent lighting is terrible-- it feels like an office instead of a cozy coffee shop.
But we decided to give it a shot and get some hot drinks...bad decision: the kids' hot chocolate tasted watered down - we could make it better with a store bought packet. The kids also had some of the baked goods that were not great: dry and almost stale tasting...better options at hannaford. My friend's espresso was really bad - he had a few sips and then dumped it out when we went outside.
I ordered a chai latte with almond milk and it tasted like lukewarm water with a few chai spices sprinkled in. I brought it back to the counter and the other worker made me a new one. It was better, but still mediocre. He also gave me a free drink coupon, which was nice, but I don't know if I'll be returning anytime soon.
I really hope this small business can make some adjustments and do well, but our experience wasn't...
