We went to this restaurant for dinner at around 6.30pm. This is a huge place with plenty of seats, so one doesn’t have to be worried about the crowd. We ordered a Banh Xeo with chicken (129k) and a tofu cooked with eggplant (99k) to share. Food was served pretty quickly. The banh xeo was huge! The server helped us cut it into smaller pieces, for us to wrap and eat the dish with rice paper. It was a wholesome dish, we plenty of vegetables and a generous amount of meat. But we were slightly surprised by the amount of oil that was left on the plate after we finished the meal. Not sure if it came from the gravy from the stir fried vegetables in the pancake, or the pancake itself. But it was a slight turn off. The tofu dish was served in a claypot and the contents remained hot throughout the meal. The tofu is tender and nicely fried and the sauce goes really well with rice. The dining experience was pretty decent, but the place can get smokey real fast if any customers order any hotplate dish. We encountered it twice during our time there, and the restaurant became smokey and filled with the smell of the dish. Apart from this, it is a good restaurant for a hearty meal.

Service here is generally quick. I came by at around half past six and the tables outside were all taken. Not to worry, they have plenty of tables inside. Generally I wouldn't worry too much...until someone orders Bun Cha, one of the dishes on a sizzling hotplate that smokes up the area real fast. That's right, if you're walking past this restaurant, you might be really curious about the sizzling hotplate chock full of meat. I got the Banh Xeo (129K) which was quite a good experience. The server helps you to cut up the pancake into smaller pieces and also asks if you are familiar with wrapping your own pancake to eat. I liked that there were plenty of vegetables and there were many chicken pieces in the pancake. Staff were also quick to notice when the rice paper ran out and asked if refills were needed. I also got the eggplant and tofu in a claypot (99K - they need to update their menu's prices which has an old pricing of 79K). This was savoury and very tasty. It came with rice and a side salad of shredded cabbage. I'm not sure what kind of dressing they used, but it was very appetizing.

With such high ratings on google, we had such high hopes for this place. However, the food was very ‘meh’. Now look, we probably ordered wrong and fancied a change away from Bun Cha etc, so thought we would go for something else. Another post recommend the Vietnamese curry, so we opted for that. It was OK. Nothing to write home about. It tasted like Aunt Maggie’s curry powder. Again, I’m not knocking it, but it’s nothing to wow the tastebuds. In addition, we had the Vietnamese beef rice. It came with pineapple and cheese, which we thought sounded odd but felt adventurous. Well, it was a very odd combination. The spring rolls, however, were something to shout about. They were excellent. I’m sure they do other dishes that are better, but our experience wasn’t the best. Service was very slow too didn’t help our experience.

I am not exaggerating when I say that Tam Coc Lantern is one of the best restaurants of Vietnam. The location is cozy but you can feel that some serious cooking is happening. The staff is friendly and the service is super fast. However what is really mindblowing is the cuisine: authentic but with a twist, delicate but explosive, reassuring but to remember. I loved the Bun Cha, these really surprised me, so well-made and a real treat for the palate. Same precise and gentle technique was used to make beef noodle soup, very comforting. However what shocked me were the desserts, please try the caramelized banana with ice cream and crepe. It is so reductivr to call it this way. I will remember contrast of consistencies and the best part: all of this for such a convenient price!!

Cooking class experience and restaurant food - exceptional. We ate at lantern restaurant one evening and then booked onto the afternoon cooking class the next day. This was a highly recommendable experience!! We learnt to cook spring rolls, bun cha and pho beef soup. The staff were super friendly and we had a great experience cooking for 3 hours with a private chef! Would highly recommend both the cooking class and restaurant food. I must say - the food in the cooking class we thought was even better and more authentic than the restaurant meal we had the night previously. Cooking class was $40USD per person, but the quality of food and the amount you get along with the private chef was exceptional! Definitely worth the money in our opinion

1st post: Incredible food, authentic with full Vietnamese flavors. Wonderful and helpful service. We will return for more delicious delights. 2nd post: Ok, so we have now turned 3 times to try a number of incredible dishes. The Banh Xeo is extraordinary, as is the Bun Cha and spring rolls. We loved the hands-on requirements for these dishes, adding herbs and rolling the food in thin rice paper and dipping in delicious sauce, which you can add garlic and chillies. Also, the drinks are very good also. The beer is ice cold! Some places don't serve a chilled beer, but at Tam Coc Lantern they do, thankfully. We highly recommend you treat yourself to the delicious Vietnamese delights at Tam Coc Lantern.
