The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre opened to public on 25 September 2004. Before it's name was Bhashani Novo Theatre. It was made autonomous by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre Bill 2010. The space center was commissioned by the Ministry of Science and Communication Technology of the Government of Bangladesh. Built on 5.45 acres of land, its spaces range in size from its about 22 meter dome, seating about 270 people; to 3 meter inflatable and portable domes where people sit on the floor. The planetarium was designed by architect Ali Imam. The Planetarium dome simulates Earth and its cool blue sky. This dome-shaped theater was built with the latest equipment, enabling visitors to soar into space as well as experience the thrills of an interplanetary journey in a three-dimensional environment. The curved ceiling represents the sky and shows moving images of planets and stars through projection onto a large-screen dome at an angle of 120 degrees. This planetarium features three kinds of exhibits. They Journey to Infinity presents a celestial show of stars, planets and other heavenly bodies in virtual reality. The ai amader Bangladesh features Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman's 7 March lecture, while The Grand Canyon describes North America's settlement clan, Garikhad, which existed in The Grand Canyon four thousand years ago. Visitors need not look up in the dome to watch the show. Instead, they feel they are watching space live, with everything around them, presented by 150 projectors. The planetarium added a new capsule simulator and smart-step floor and 3D video. In 2013 the planetarium added a Nuclear Industrial Information Centre.

According to the government plan adopted in 1995, the government of Bangladesh took measures to establish it. It was designed by the then Deputy Director of Public Works Department , Ali Imam . The design was approved at the Ecnec meeting held on 17 March 1997 and construction began on 17 July 2000. Initially, it was supposed to be installed next to the National Science and Technology Museum in Agargaon, Dhaka. All major internal engineering work, including installation of its machinery, was done by the Optics Manufacturing Company of Japan. The facility was built by Bangladeshi Masud & Company. Bangladesh University of EngineeringAn advisory committee headed by Professor Alamgir Habib participated in the construction supervision. After operating from 17 July 2000 to 7 November 2001, it was closed and later reopened in mid-2002. Construction was completed in May 2003 and inaugurated on 25 September by the Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Begum Khaleda Zia . Its construction cost is Tk 120 crore. Architect Ali Imam designed this Novo Theater. A mixture of ancient classical and modern architecture has been followed in this Novotheater. The seven stars along with the seven stars of Saptarshimandal have special importance in astronomy . As a symbol of this, the front of the main building has a total of 14 free height Roman columns, seven on each side, with a height of 40 feet. The height of the main dome with a diameter of 32 meters is equal to 5 floors. It has a space theater game (275 seats), a ride simulator (30 seats), conference rooms with film and slide show facilities etc. Novotheater has three floors underground and two floors above ground. There is a separate staircase on the east side for the disabled and on the two floors below ground there are portraits and portraits of the world's best scientists.

Once there was a time when the quality of novo theatre was great and forward of time. But after my recent visit I am hugely disappointed with what I have experienced here. I watched an one hour show on "The starry sky" which costed me 100 tk.To my utter surprise the first 30 minutes of that show was about Bangladeshi history. You don't usually go to a planetarium to see a country's history, especially when you buy a ticket of a science show. The show of the first 30 minutes was below average in artistic values which made that severely uninteresting. Than after 15 minutes things got disturbing as the story-telling( read history telling) hit the top range of monotony. After the show came to its promised subject I was again hugely disappointed. The attending crow was utterly disturbing.Parents brought their infants to watch the show with which resulted in constant distracting noise. few person from the audience turned on their mobile flash lights and focused it on the screen which was quite a bit stupid and annoying at the same time. Unfortunately there was no one to supervise and stop this nuisance. Coming back to the quality of the show. While watchin it might seem that they have projected a 140p video on a roundish screen. The imagery lacked sharpness severely. There were a few moments of woo. But that won't make the money worth it. They have a 5D show also which was also uninteresting as well. But kids might enjoy this one. My advice is don't visit this place if you value your time. P.S : the outdoor is good for taking pictures.

It is a good place for getting knowledge about astronomical science. It is located just opposite to the old airport. The mission and vision of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre is to cultivate positive attitude towards science in the minds of the people by education through entertainment and to eliminate fallacy about outer space from the society and to encourage young generation to learn science and technology is the mission of this informal science education institution. A huge number of sophisticated technological instruments have been procured from Japan, America, Korea, France, Italy and India for the planetarium. Not only the Planetarium Show a very thrilling Ride Simulator, 5D Movie theater, 5D Interactive Edutainment Simulator, model of Planets of Solar System, Scientific & Digital Exhibits and some portraits of world-renowned Scientists and Scholars are also available at the site of Novo Theater. Besides a 150 seated well-furnished auditorium, 50 seated conference room, hydraulic lifts, ramp and a car parking area having the capacity of 100 vehicles are belonging to the Novotheatre. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theaters' project started in 1997 and inaugurated in 25th September 2004. The theater has a up to date tilted domed planetarium combined with a large format motion picture system. Equipment of the planetarium are supplied and maintained by GOTO Inc. Japan. A prayer room, exhibition hall and open spaces to walk around are included into this place .
