Galleon Beach - Freeman Bay area of ENGLISH HARBOR ANTIGUA Is one of my favorite Anchorages / places in the entire Caribbean.
It Faces the Ocean, Nelson's Boat Yard, The Fort where the Sunsets Each night, The talisker rowing race across the Atlantic finishes in front of the spectacular Little Beach each year, New Year's Eve is Amazing Fire works sound like Cannons, every Thursday The Inn has live music on the beach and on Sunday you can hear the celebrations and the steel drums from above at Shirley Heights.
The Inn at English Harbor is currently open the other little cottages to the right of the reef have not opened.
The dinghy dock has been rebuilt and a water taxi is operating.
The Beach Bar was not open November, December it finally opened in January 2019 and well worth the wait - it makes the Bay such a happy place with the music playing, reminds me of the little bar in the movie KOKOMO.
I took the Freeman Bay Trail I guess I am just getting older as paying the $10.00 for the can each way to Shirley Heights seems a lot easier then the 25 minute hike the steep famous trail from Galleon Beach.
The Beach clean the Sand is white and soft towards the left side where the cottages are closed the reef comes all the way to shore and there is a lot of turtle grass...
Yes, there are a lot of Sea Turtles off of this beach, you can swim with them or just see their little yellow heads on...

Having said that, the snorkelling was better than we have experienced on other beaches, and we did see a turtle pop its head out of the water although it swam off pretty quickly when we tried to join it! If you’re in to snorkelling, follow the ridge of rocks along the shoreline and you’ll see a few different varieties of tropical fish hiding underneath. There’s a sunken galleon by the rocks at the entrance to the bay. We watched a group led by a guide swim out to it, but I don’t think I’d have the confidence to do it by myself. Sun loungers were in 2 locations: one outside the hotel at one end of the beach - we were told that we couldn’t rent these as non-residents. So we walked to the other end of the beach to the other sun loungers to be told that they weren’t open until the following day. After a bit of bartering however, we were allowed to rent them for 100 ECD for the day for 2 (negotiated down from 180 ECD). We paid it but I did feel a bit fleeced! We visited in June and it was very quiet. All in all, a great beach with some added interest...
