Jardín Botánico Carlos Thays is a beautiful botanical garden located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Spread across 18 hectares, it contains over 5,500 species of plants from around the world. I recently visited the garden on a sunny day and was thoroughly impressed with both the diversity of plant life and the thoughtful design of the space.
Upon entering the gardens, I was immediately struck by the sheer variety of flora on display. There are sprawling lawns, intricate hedge mazes, rose gardens, and sections dedicated to cacti, tropical plants, native Argentine species, and more. No matter where you look, there is always something eye-catching and unique to behold. Many of the plants are carefully labeled, making it easy to identify the different species.
One of my favorite aspects was how artfully designed the overall layout is. There are secluded little nooks and tranquil ponds tucked away between flower beds and trees, creating a very serene atmosphere even on a busy day. The winding paths curve through the gardens in such a way that new sights continuously reveal themselves as you explore. There are delightful surprises around every corner, from whimsical topiaries to graceful weeping willows hanging over benches.
The tranquility of the space makes it the perfect spot for a relaxing stroll or some quiet contemplation. Families and couples were dispersed throughout the gardens taking in the sights. It is a wonderful place to appreciate nature in the midst of the bustling city. The only downside was how quickly the hours passed as I lost myself wandering the grounds!
In summary, Jardín Botánico Carlos Thays is an exceptional urban oasis not to be missed if visiting Buenos Aires. The diversity of plant species, thoughtful design, and peaceful ambiance come together to create a beautiful, rejuvenating experience. I highly recommend taking the time to leisurely explore every corner of these magnificent gardens. It is sure to be a highlight of any trip...
Read moreThe gardens are a decent size, not too big to wonder around in a reasonable length of time. Sadly this is not the best botanical gardens we've seen by any means, it's nice and pleasant but overall we were quite disappointed. There are some nice areas of the grounds but the vast majority is just green plants, trees or scrubs. It may be due to the time of year we visited but there was very little colour around with the exception of a few small sections. It's surrounded closely by roads so no matter where you sit there is noise from the activity of those streets. I did like this place but it's nothing special unfortunately, nice enough for a visit and wonder around for an hour or so. If you bring a picnic make sure to stay off the grass and to the benches and...
Read moreA guitarist playing harmoniously under the trees. A quiet fountain that held my son’s full attention. That’s the kind of beauty we found at the Jardín Botánico Carlos Thays.
We arrived late morning, just as the city started to slow down. It was easy to get there by bus, and once inside, it felt like the pace of the day shifted. No crowds, no noise.
The gardens aren’t overly sculpted or dramatic. They’re subtle, almost restrained.
We learned a bit about native Argentine plants like Yerba Mate.
It’s a short walk from there to the Japanese Gardens, which made for a lovely, quiet rhythm to the afternoon.
This isn’t a destination built to impress in loud ways. But it left a memorable...
