One of my absolute favourite stops in McLaren Vale. If you enjoy heritage, history, and exceptional fortified wines, this is a must-visit. The tasting room is spacious, welcoming, and beautifully laid out, with knowledgeable staff who guide you through their selection. I’ve been back a few times now, and I’ll admit I’ve spent more than a few dollars stocking up on their rich fortified range and limited editions.

The on-site museum is a real highlight. It showcases the history of the Hardy family and winemaking in the region, with original wine barrels, processing equipment, and interpretive panels that give insight into South Australia's wine legacy. You can even catch a view of the grape crushing platform during vintage season, which adds a real hands-on feel to the visit.

Outside, there's a well maintained BBQ and picnic area under shady trees, perfect for relaxing with friends and family. Clean toilet facilities and ample parking make it an easy stop. The grounds themselves are lovely, blending historical charm with working winery practicality.

The building’s red-brick and bluestone exterior is stunning, and there’s a calm sense of tradition as you wander through the barrel halls. If you enjoy wine with a story behind it, Hardys is a fantastic way to experience McLaren Vale’s past and present.

We were booked and paid months in advance for a tasting for a friend's birthday. We arrived on time on our bus and were told at the gate that we can't come in because no tastings were allowed that day. After politely explaining that we have a booking, they begrudgingly allowed us to come in but with the caveat that our tasting was to be shorter than we had booked and paid for.

Once inside, the staff treated us like it was a hassle to serve us, even though the bar at the cellar door was not busy. Tastings were given in the same used glasses, even if you were switching between red and white. One of the bartenders insisted on serving a tasting to my friend using a random dirty glass that was sitting on the bar - it wasn't my friend's glass, it was just sitting there with a heap of other dirty glassware on the bar.

I can’t speak highly enough of the Hardys Hidden Secrets tour which my partner and I went on today. He’s been in the wine business for many years and we’ve done more wine tours and tastings than I can remember, but this one was exceptional. We were very glad that we had set aside plenty of time in our day, so we didn’t have to rush this one. Alison, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and engaging, and made the tour very interesting - not just about the wine-making, but telling tales relating to family members. There’s plenty to see and hear about, and it’s clear that the tradition and history of wine making is as important to the Hardy family as the quality of their wines. The wine tasting itself (accompanied by some nibbles) was very enjoyable…we loved every wine we tried (all reds, and one fortified). A definite 10/10 from us.

The Tintara Cellar door is conveniently located in a small town so you don’t need to travel too far. It is located next to a hotel so you can retire there after your tasting. The outdoor area is wonderful and plenty of time can be spent under a large tree outside or walking the immaculate grounds. The wines are reasonably priced and you want to drink too flight then Hardys have that as well.
